Haman went out that day happy and in high spirits. But when he saw Mordecai at the king’s gate and observed that he neither rose nor showed fear in his presence, he was filled with rage against Mordecai.

That day Haman was happy. So he left the palace in a good mood. But then he saw Mordecai at the palace gate. He noticed that Mordecai didn’t stand up when he walked by. In fact, Mordecai didn’t have any respect for him at all. So he was very angry with him.

And Haman went out that day joyful and glad of heart. But when Haman saw Mordecai in the king’s gate, that he neither rose nor trembled before him, he was filled with wrath against Mordecai.

Haman was a happy man as he left the banquet! But when he saw Mordecai sitting at the palace gate, not standing up or trembling nervously before him, Haman became furious.

Then in a furious rage Nebuchadnezzar gave orders to bring in Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king.

“ I assure you: You will weep and wail, but the world will rejoice. You will become sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy.

Do horses gallop on the cliffs; does anyone plow there with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood—you who rejoice over Lo-debar and say,“ Didn’t we capture Karnaim for ourselves by our own strength?”

So Ahab went to his palace resentful and angry because of what Naboth the Jezreelite had told him. He had said,“ I will not give you my fathers’ inheritance.” He lay down on his bed, turned his face away, and didn’t eat any food.

the joy of the wicked has been brief and the happiness of the godless has lasted only a moment?

Woe to you who are now full, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are now laughing, for you will mourn and weep.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king,“ Nebuchadnezzar, we don’t need to give you an answer to this question.If the God we serve exists, then He can rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire, and He can rescue us from the power of you, the king.But even if He does not rescue us, we want you as king to know that we will not serve your gods or worship the gold statue you set up.”Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with rage, and the expression on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He gave orders to heat the furnace seven times more than was customary,

When the young women were assembled together for a second time, Mordecai was sitting at the King’s Gate.

who despises the one rejected by the Lord but honors those who fear the Lord, who keeps his word whatever the cost,

The entire royal staff at the King’s Gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, because the king had commanded this to be done for him. But Mordecai would not bow down or pay homage.

Though an army deploys against me, my heart is not afraid; though a war breaks out against me, still I am confident.

Then Herod, when he saw that he had been outwitted by the wise men, flew into a rage. He gave orders to massacre all the male children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, in keeping with the time he had learned from the wise men.

Haven’t the members of my household said,“ Who is there who has not had enough to eat at Job’s table?”

Be miserable and mourn and weep. Your laughter must change to mourning and your joy to sorrow.

Don’t fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

When they heard these things, they were enraged in their hearts and gnashed their teeth at him.
