The king said,“ Who is in the court?” Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the palace to speak to the king about impaling Mordecai on the pole he had set up for him.

The wicked draw the sword and bend the bow to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright.

The wicked lie in wait for the righteous, intent on putting them to death;

Jezebel his wife said,“ Is this how you act as king over Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. I’ll get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”

Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs attending the king, said,“ A pole reaching to a height of fifty cubits stands by Haman’s house. He had it set up for Mordecai, who spoke up to help the king.” The king said,“ Impale him on it!”So they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai. Then the king’s fury subsided.

He has prepared his deadly weapons; he makes ready his flaming arrows.Whoever is pregnant with evil conceives trouble and gives birth to disillusionment.Whoever digs a hole and scoops it out falls into the pit they have made.The trouble they cause recoils on them; their violence comes down on their own heads.

The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to,because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him.Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl,“ Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.”And he promised her with an oath,“ Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”She went out and said to her mother,“ What shall I ask for?”“ The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.

Now Amnon had an adviser named Jonadab son of Shimeah, David’s brother. Jonadab was a very shrewd man.He asked Amnon,“ Why do you, the king’s son, look so haggard morning after morning? Won’t you tell me?” Amnon said to him,“ I’m in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.”“ Go to bed and pretend to be ill,” Jonadab said.“ When your father comes to see you, say to him,‘ I would like my sister Tamar to come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare the food in my sight so I may watch her and then eat it from her hand.’”

( There was never anyone like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, urged on by Jezebel his wife.

Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug; their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.

These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves!

“ Their feet are swift to shed blood;

They wrote out in the script of each province and in the language of each people all Haman’s orders to the king’s satraps, the governors of the various provinces and the nobles of the various peoples. These were written in the name of King Xerxes himself and sealed with his own ring.Dispatches were sent by couriers to all the king’s provinces with the order to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews— young and old, women and children— on a single day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, and to plunder their goods.A copy of the text of the edict was to be issued as law in every province and made known to the people of every nationality so they would be ready for that day.The couriers went out, spurred on by the king’s command, and the edict was issued in the citadel of Susa. The king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was bewildered.

He too followed the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother encouraged him to act wickedly.He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had done, for after his father’s death they became his advisers, to his undoing.
