“ Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”

“ Go. Gather together all the Jews who are in Susa. And fast for my benefit. Don’t eat or drink anything for three days. Don’t do it night or day. I and my attendants will fast just as you do. Then I’ll go to the king. I’ll do it even though it’s against the law. And if I have to die, I’ll die.”

約沙法懼怕，就定意尋求耶和華，在全猶大宣告禁食。

然而你們現在要禁食，哭泣，哀號，一心歸向我。這是耶和華說的。你們要撕裂心腸，不要撕裂衣服。歸向耶和華－你們的神，因為他有恩惠，有憐憫，不輕易發怒，有豐盛的慈愛，並且會改變心意，不降那災難。誰知道他也許會回心轉意，留下餘福，就是獻給耶和華－你們神的素祭和澆酒祭。你們要在錫安吹角，使禁食的日子分別為聖，宣告嚴肅會。聚集百姓，使會眾自潔；召集老年人，聚集孩童和在母懷吃奶的；使新郎出內室，新娘離開洞房。事奉耶和華的祭司要在走廊和祭壇間哭泣，說：「耶和華啊，求你顧惜你的百姓，不要使你的產業受羞辱，在列國中成為笑柄。為何讓人在萬民中說『他們的神在哪裏』呢？」

因為凡要救自己生命的，必喪失生命；凡為我喪失生命的，他必救自己的生命。

我揀選他，為要叫他命令他的子孫和後代家屬遵行耶和華的道，秉公行義，使耶和華所應許亞伯拉罕的話都實現了。」

若你們認為事奉耶和華不好，今日就可以選擇所要事奉的：是你們列祖在大河那邊所事奉的神明，或是你們所住這地亞摩利人的神明呢？至於我和我家，我們必定事奉耶和華。」

約拿進城，走了一天，宣告說：「再過四十天，尼尼微要傾覆了！」尼尼微人就信服神，宣告禁食，從最大的到最小的都穿上麻衣。這消息傳到尼尼微王那裏，他就從寶座起來，脫下朝服，披上麻布，坐在灰中。他叫人通告尼尼微全城，說：「王和大臣有令，人、畜、牛、羊都不可嘗任何東西，不可吃，也不可喝水。人與牲畜都要披上麻布，切切求告神。各人要回轉離開惡道，離棄自己掌中的殘暴。誰知道神也許會回心轉意，不發烈怒，使我們不致滅亡。」

你們要使禁食的日子分別為聖，宣告嚴肅會，召集長老和這地所有的居民來到耶和華－你們神的殿，向耶和華哀求。哀哉，這日子！因為耶和華的日子臨近，好像毀滅從全能者來到。

願全能的神使你們在那人面前蒙憐憫，放你們另一個兄弟和便雅憫回來。我若要失喪兒子，就喪了吧！」

第三日，以斯帖穿上朝服，站立在王宮的內院，對着王宮。王在殿裏坐在寶座上，對着殿的門。

你要剛強，我們要為自己的百姓，為我們神的城鎮奮勇。願耶和華照他所看為好的去做！」

也為我的性命把自己的生死置之度外；不但我感謝他們，就是外邦的眾教會也感謝他們。

當那日，萬軍之主耶和華使人哭泣哀號，頭上光禿，身披麻布。

因他為做基督的工作不顧性命，幾乎至死，為要補足你們供應我不夠的地方。

他三天甚麼都看不見，也不吃也不喝。

天快亮的時候，保羅勸眾人都用餐，說：「你們一直捱餓等候，不吃甚麼，已經十四天了。

約拿三日三夜在大魚肚腹中，同樣，人子也要三日三夜在地裏面。

於是保羅回答：「你們為甚麼這樣痛哭，使我心碎呢？我為主耶穌的名，不但被人捆綁，就是死在耶路撒冷也是願意的。」

他拚了命殺那非利士人，並且耶和華為全以色列大施拯救。那時你看見，也很歡喜，現在為何要犯罪，流無辜人的血，無緣無故殺大衛呢？」

向他說話的天使離開後，哥尼流叫了兩個僕人和常伺候他的一個虔誠的兵來，
