以扫听了他父亲的话，就放声痛哭，说：“我父啊，求你也为我祝福！”

“哥拉汛哪，你有祸了！伯赛大啊，你有祸了！因为在你们中间所行的异能，若行在推罗、西顿，他们早已披麻蒙灰悔改了。

约伯便起来，撕裂外袍，剃了头，伏在地上下拜，

约拿进城走了一日，宣告说：“再等四十日，尼尼微必倾覆了！”尼尼微人信服神，便宣告禁食，从最大的到至小的都穿麻衣。这信息传到尼尼微王的耳中，他就下了宝座，脱下朝服，披上麻布，坐在灰中。他又使人遍告尼尼微通城，说：“王和大臣有令，人不可尝什么，牲畜、牛羊不可吃草，也不可喝水。人与牲畜都当披上麻布；人要切切求告神。各人回头离开所行的恶道，丢弃手中的强暴。或者神转意后悔，不发烈怒，使我们不致灭亡，也未可知。”

所以我说：“你们转眼不看我，我要痛哭。不要因我众民的毁灭，就竭力安慰我。”

先知说：因此我必大声哀号，赤脚露体而行；又要呼号如野狗，哀鸣如鸵鸟。

耶和华的大日临近，临近而且甚快，乃是耶和华日子的风声；勇士必痛痛地哭号。

约书亚便撕裂衣服；他和以色列的长老把灰撒在头上，在耶和华的约柜前俯伏在地，直到晚上。

约伯就坐在炉灰中，拿瓦片刮身体。

王的谕旨所到的各省各处，犹大人大大悲哀，禁食哭泣哀号，穿麻衣躺在灰中的甚多。

因此我厌恶自己，在尘土和炉灰中懊悔。”

哈曼对亚哈随鲁王说：“有一种民散居在王国各省的民中；他们的律例与万民的律例不同，也不守王的律例，所以容留他们与王无益。王若以为美，请下旨意灭绝他们；我就捐一万他连得银子交给掌管国帑的人，纳入王的府库。”于是王从自己手上摘下戒指给犹大人的仇敌，亚甲族哈米大他的儿子哈曼。王对哈曼说：“这银子仍赐给你，这民也交给你，你可以随意待他们。”正月十三日，就召了王的书记来，照着哈曼一切所吩咐的，用各省的文字、各族的方言，奉亚哈随鲁王的名写旨意，传与总督和各省的省长，并各族的首领；又用王的戒指盖印，交给驿卒传到王的各省，吩咐将犹大人，无论老少妇女孩子，在一日之间，十二月，就是亚达月十三日，全然剪除，杀戮灭绝，并夺他们的财为掠物。

这样禁食岂是我所拣选、使人刻苦己心的日子吗？岂是叫人垂头像苇子，用麻布和炉灰铺在他以下吗？你这可称为禁食、为耶和华所悦纳的日子吗？
