“ Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise:

敬爾父母、此為寓許之首誡、

以福許人之首誡、曰、敬爾父母、

敬爾父母、此為首誡有應許者、

孝順父母、此天職也。

“ Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment accompanied by a promise, namely,

“ Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise:

“ Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

‘ Cursed is anyone who dishonors father or mother.’ And all the people will reply,‘ Amen.’

Then Jeremiah turned to the Recabites and said,“ This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says:‘ You have obeyed your ancestor Jehonadab in every respect, following all his instructions.’

If you insult your father or mother, your light will be snuffed out in total darkness.

For instance, God says,‘ Honor your father and mother,’ and‘ Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents,‘ Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.

Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.

Then he said,“ You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition.For instance, Moses gave you this law from God:‘ Honor your father and mother,’ and‘ Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents,‘ Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents.And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others.”

The Lord of Heaven’s Armies says to the priests:“ A son honors his father, and a servant respects his master. If I am your father and master, where are the honor and respect I deserve? You have shown contempt for my name!“ But you ask,‘ How have we ever shown contempt for your name?’

Fathers and mothers are treated with contempt. Foreigners are forced to pay for protection. Orphans and widows are wronged and oppressed among you.
