All share a common destiny— the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad, the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. As it is with the good, so with the sinful; as it is with those who take oaths, so with those who are afraid to take them.

Everyone will die someday. Death comes to godly and sinful people alike. It comes to good and bad people alike. It comes to“ clean” and“ unclean” people alike. Those who offer sacrifices and those who don’t offer them also die. A good person dies, and so does a sinner. Those who make promises die. So do those who are afraid to make them.

It is the same for all, since the same event happens to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As the good one is, so is the sinner, and he who swears is as he who shuns an oath.

The same destiny ultimately awaits everyone, whether righteous or wicked, good or bad, ceremonially clean or unclean, religious or irreligious. Good people receive the same treatment as sinners, and people who make promises to God are treated like people who don’t.

And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.

The wise have eyes in their heads, while the fool walks in the darkness; but I came to realize that the same fate overtakes them both.Then I said to myself,“ The fate of the fool will overtake me also. What then do I gain by being wise?” I said to myself,“ This too is meaningless.”For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered; the days have already come when both have been forgotten. Like the fool, the wise too must die!

It is all the same; that is why I say,‘ He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’

“ So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me,” says the Lord Almighty.

For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

Now the men had said to her,“ This oath you made us swear will not be binding on usunless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house.If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them.But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.”

It is good to grasp the one and not let go of the other. Whoever fears God will avoid all extremes.

Although a wicked person who commits a hundred crimes may live a long time, I know that it will go better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him.Yet because the wicked do not fear God, it will not go well with them, and their days will not lengthen like a shadow.There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless.

To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart.

And he said to me,“ This is the curse that is going out over the whole land; for according to what it says on one side, every thief will be banished, and according to what it says on the other, everyone who swears falsely will be banished.The Lord Almighty declares,‘ I will send it out, and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of anyone who swears falsely by my name. It will remain in that house and destroy it completely, both its timbers and its stones.’”

Why do the wicked live on, growing old and increasing in power?They see their children established around them, their offspring before their eyes.Their homes are safe and free from fear; the rod of God is not on them.Their bulls never fail to breed; their cows calve and do not miscarry.They send forth their children as a flock; their little ones dance about.They sing to the music of timbrel and lyre; they make merry to the sound of the pipe.They spend their years in prosperity and go down to the grave in peace.Yet they say to God,‘ Leave us alone! We have no desire to know your ways.Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What would we gain by praying to him?’But their prosperity is not in their own hands, so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.“ Yet how often is the lamp of the wicked snuffed out? How often does calamity come upon them, the fate God allots in his anger?How often are they like straw before the wind, like chaff swept away by a gale?It is said,‘ God stores up the punishment of the wicked for their children.’ Let him repay the wicked, so that they themselves will experience it!Let their own eyes see their destruction; let them drink the cup of the wrath of the Almighty.For what do they care about the families they leave behind when their allotted months come to an end?“ Can anyone teach knowledge to God, since he judges even the highest?One person dies in full vigor, completely secure and at ease,well nourished in body, bones rich with marrow.Another dies in bitterness of soul, never having enjoyed anything good.Side by side they lie in the dust, and worms cover them both.“ I know full well what you are thinking, the schemes by which you would wrong me.You say,‘ Where now is the house of the great, the tents where the wicked lived?’Have you never questioned those who travel? Have you paid no regard to their accounts—that the wicked are spared from the day of calamity, that they are delivered from the day of wrath?Who denounces their conduct to their face? Who repays them for what they have done?They are carried to the grave, and watch is kept over their tombs.The soil in the valley is sweet to them; everyone follows after them, and a countless throng goes before them.“ So how can you console me with your nonsense? Nothing is left of your answers but falsehood!”

He despised the oath by breaking the covenant. Because he had given his hand in pledge and yet did all these things, he shall not escape.“‘ Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, I will repay him for despising my oath and breaking my covenant.

I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living,

even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place?

But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly evildoers prosper, and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’”

If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.

When they went into the woods, they saw the honey oozing out; yet no one put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath.
