All share a common destiny— the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad, the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. As it is with the good, so with the sinful; as it is with those who take oaths, so with those who are afraid to take them.

Everyone will die someday. Death comes to godly and sinful people alike. It comes to good and bad people alike. It comes to“ clean” and“ unclean” people alike. Those who offer sacrifices and those who don’t offer them also die. A good person dies, and so does a sinner. Those who make promises die. So do those who are afraid to make them.

It is the same for all, since the same event happens to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As the good one is, so is the sinner, and he who swears is as he who shuns an oath.

The same destiny ultimately awaits everyone, whether righteous or wicked, good or bad, ceremonially clean or unclean, religious or irreligious. Good people receive the same treatment as sinners, and people who make promises to God are treated like people who don’t.

The wise man’s eyes are in his head, and the fool walketh in darkness: and yet I perceived that one event happeneth to them all.Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then said I in my heart, that this also is vanity.For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance for ever; seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. And how doth the wise man die even as the fool!

It is all one; therefore I say, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.

And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the sojourner from his right, and fear not me, saith Jehovah of hosts.

For I was envious at the arrogant, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

And the men said unto her, We will be guiltless of this thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt gather unto thee into the house thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household.And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we shall be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.But if thou utter this our business, then we shall be guiltless of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from that withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth from them all.

Though a sinner do evil a hundred times, and prolong his days, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, that fear before him:but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.There is a vanity which is done upon the earth, that there are righteous men unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.

For to the man that pleaseth him God giveth wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that pleaseth God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole land: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off on the one side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off on the other side according to it.I will cause it to go forth, saith Jehovah of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name; and it shall abide in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

Wherefore do the wicked live, Become old, yea, wax mighty in power?Their seed is established with them in their sight, And their offspring before their eyes.Their houses are safe from fear, Neither is the rod of God upon them.Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; Their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.They send forth their little ones like a flock, And their children dance.They sing to the timbrel and harp, And rejoice at the sound of the pipe.They spend their days in prosperity, And in a moment they go down to Sheol.And they say unto God, Depart from us; For we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?Lo, their prosperity is not in their hand: The counsel of the wicked is far from me.How oft is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out? That their calamity cometh upon them? That God distributeth sorrows in his anger?That they are as stubble before the wind, And as chaff that the storm carrieth away?Ye say, God layeth up his iniquity for his children. Let him recompense it unto himself, that he may know it:Let his own eyes see his destruction, And let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty.For what careth he for his house after him, When the number of his months is cut off?Shall any teach God knowledge, Seeing he judgeth those that are high?One dieth in his full strength, Being wholly at ease and quiet:His pails are full of milk, And the marrow of his bones is moistened.And another dieth in bitterness of soul, And never tasteth of good.They lie down alike in the dust, And the worm covereth them.Behold, I know your thoughts, And the devices wherewith ye would wrong me.For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? And where is the tent wherein the wicked dwelt?Have ye not asked wayfaring men? And do ye not know their evidences,That the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity? That they are led forth to the day of wrath?Who shall declare his way to his face? And who shall repay him what he hath done?Yet shall he be borne to the grave, And men shall keep watch over the tomb.The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, And all men shall draw after him, As there were innumerable before him.How then comfort ye me in vain, Seeing in your answers there remaineth only falsehood?

For he hath despised the oath by breaking the covenant; and behold, he had given his hand, and yet hath done all these things; he shall not escape.Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: As I live, surely mine oath that he hath despised, and my covenant that he hath broken, I will even bring it upon his own head.

and I will make thee swear by Jehovah, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that thou wilt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:

yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, and yet enjoy no good, do not all go to one place?

And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are built up; yea, they tempt God, and escape.

And if the woman be not willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath; only thou shalt not bring my son thither again.And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning this matter.

And when the people were come unto the forest, behold, the honey dropped: but no man put his hand to his mouth; for the people feared the oath.
