I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.

Here’s something else I’ve seen on this earth. Races aren’t always won by those who run fast. Battles aren’t always won by those who are strong. Wise people don’t always have plenty of food. Clever people aren’t always wealthy. Those who have learned a lot aren’t always successful. God controls the timing of every event. He also controls how things turn out.

Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.

I have observed something else under the sun. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skillful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. It is all decided by chance, by being in the right place at the right time.

Again I saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, or the battle to the strong, or bread to the wise, or riches to the discerning, or favor to the skillful; rather, time and chance happen to all of them.

耶和华这样说：“智慧人不可夸耀自己的智慧，勇士不可夸耀自己的勇力，财主不可夸耀自己的财富。

任何智慧、聪明、谋略都不能敌挡耶和华。马是为打仗之日预备的，胜利却在于耶和华。

除非主命定，谁能说成，就成了呢？或祸或福，不都是出于至高者的口吗？

把低微的安置在高位，把哀恸的高举于安稳之处；又挫败狡猾人的计谋，使他们的手所作的无法成全；他使有智慧的人中了自己的诡计，使奸诈人的谋算快快失败。他们白天遇见黑暗，中午摸索如在夜间。

行动迅速的不能逃走，强而有力的不能施展他的勇力，勇士也不能救自己；拿弓的人站立不住，跑得快的不能逃走，骑马的也不能救自己。到那日，最勇敢的战士，也是赤身逃跑。’这是耶和华的宣告。”

我自己心里说：“神必审判义人和恶人，因为各样事务、各样工作都有定时。”

他就说：“全犹大的人、耶路撒冷的居民和约沙法王啊，你们要留意！耶和华这样对你们说：‘你们不要因这大军惧怕和惊慌，因为战争的胜负不是在于你们，而是在于神。

我知道神所作的一切，都必永存，无可增添，无可减少；神这样作，为要使人在他面前存敬畏的心。

“快跑的跑不掉，勇士也不能逃脱；他们在北方、在幼发拉底河边，都绊跌仆倒。

君王不是因兵多得胜，勇士不是因力大得救。想靠马得胜是枉然的；马虽然力大，也不能救人。

他喜欢的不是马的力大，他喜悦的不是人的腿快。耶和华喜悦敬畏他的人，喜悦仰望他慈爱的人。

智慧人的眼目明亮，愚昧人却走在黑暗中。我也知道同一的命运要临到这两种人身上。我自己心里说：“临到愚昧人身上的，也必临到我身上；那么，我为什么要更有智慧呢？”于是我心里说：“这也是虚空。”

我看见各样的劳碌和各样精巧的工作，都是出于人与人彼此的竞争。这也是虚空，也是捕风。

亚希多弗见自己的谋略不被采纳，就预备了驴子，起程往本城自己的家去。他安排好了家里的事，就上吊死了，埋葬在他父亲的坟墓里。

押沙龙和以色列众人都说：“亚基人户筛的谋略比亚希多弗的好。”因为耶和华定意要破坏亚希多弗的好计谋，为要降灾祸给押沙龙。

我又看见日光之下所发生一切欺压的事：受欺压的流泪，却无人安慰他们；欺压他们的，手里握着权柄，因此无人安慰受欺压的。

我转过来观察智慧、狂妄和愚昧。王的继承人还能作什么呢？只不过作先前作过的罢了。

你们不要多说骄傲的话，也不要口出狂妄之言，因为耶和华是全知的神，人的一切行为他都鉴察。勇士的弓都被折断，跌倒的人却以力量束腰。饱足的，要劳碌觅食，饥饿的，不再饥饿；不能生育的，生了七个儿女，有过许多儿女的，反倒衰微。耶和华使人死，也使人活；使人下阴间，也使人从阴间上来。耶和华使人贫穷，也使人富足；使人降卑，也使人升高。他从灰尘中抬举贫寒的人，从粪堆中提拔穷乏的人，使他们与显贵同坐，承受尊贵的座位。大地的柱子属于耶和华，他把全地安放在柱子上面。耶和华必保护虔诚人的脚步，却使恶人在黑暗中灭亡，因为人得胜不是靠着力量。至高者在天上打雷，耶和华必打碎与他作对的人。耶和华要审判地的四极，却要赐力量给他所立的王，高举他膏立之人的角。”

那凭着自己旨意所计划而行万事的，按着他预先所安排的，预定我们在基督里得基业（“得基业”或译：“成为神的产业”），

所以，骄傲像链子戴在他们的颈项上，强暴好像衣裳穿在他们的身上。他们的罪孽是出于麻木的心（按照《马索拉文本》，“他们的罪孽是出于麻木的心”应作“他们的眼睛因体胖而凸出”；现参照《七十士译本》翻译），他们心里的恶念泛滥。

你要记念耶和华你的神，因为得财富的能力是他赐给你的，为要坚定他向你的列祖起誓所立的约，像今天一样。

要观察神的作为，因为他所屈曲的，谁能弄直呢？

那时，你们就要再看出义人与恶人、事奉神的人和不事奉他的人之间有什么分别。”

他若安静不动，谁能定他有罪呢？他若掩面，谁能看见他呢？无论对待一国或一人，都是这样。

地上所有的居民，在他来说都是虚无；在天上的万军中，他凭自己的意旨行事；在地上的居民中，也是这样；没有人能拦住他的手，或问他说：‘你作什么？’

洗鲁雅的三个儿子约押、亚比筛和亚撒黑都在那里。亚撒黑的腿轻快如野地的羚羊一般。亚撒黑追赶押尼珥，紧紧地跟着他，不偏左，也不偏右。押尼珥往后瞧着，说：“你是亚撒黑吗？”他回答：“我正是。”押尼珥对他说：“你或转左或转右，抓住一个年轻人，夺去他的武器吧！”可是亚撒黑不愿意离开不追赶他。押尼珥再一次对亚撒黑说：“你离开，别追赶我！我为什么要把你砍倒在地上呢？以后怎么还有脸见你的哥哥约押呢？”亚撒黑不肯离开，所以押尼珥就用枪的尾端刺入了他的肚子，枪从他的背后穿出。亚撒黑仆倒在那里，当场死了。所有来到亚撒黑倒毙的地方的人，都站住不动。

这样，大卫用机弦和一块石子胜过了那非利士人。大卫击杀了那非利士人，但他手中没有刀。
