我又轉念：見日光之下，快跑的未必能贏；力戰的未必得勝；智慧的未必得糧食；明哲的未必得資財；靈巧的未必得喜悅。所臨到眾人的是在乎當時的機會。

我轉眼又看到日光之下：快跑的未必賽贏，勇士未必戰勝，有智慧的未必得糧食，有悟性的未必得財富，明智者未必得恩惠；因為時機和機遇勝過一切。

我轉觀日下、疾趨者未必先至、力戰者未必獲勝、智者未必得食、達者未必得財、有技能者未必蒙恩寵、凡事皆由時勢而成、

我又遍覽天下事、疾趨未必先至、勁旅未必獲捷、有智未必得餱糧、聰明未必得貨財、機巧未必沐恩寵、凡百之事、悉由偶然而至。

我又觀日下之事、見疾趨者未必先至、有力者未必得勝、智者未必得食、哲者未必得財、有識者未必蒙恩、凡眾所遇、或隨時會、或屬偶然、

I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.

Here’s something else I’ve seen on this earth. Races aren’t always won by those who run fast. Battles aren’t always won by those who are strong. Wise people don’t always have plenty of food. Clever people aren’t always wealthy. Those who have learned a lot aren’t always successful. God controls the timing of every event. He also controls how things turn out.

Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.

I have observed something else under the sun. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skillful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. It is all decided by chance, by being in the right place at the right time.

Again I saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, or the battle to the strong, or bread to the wise, or riches to the discerning, or favor to the skillful; rather, time and chance happen to all of them.

I again saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift and the battle is not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise nor wealth to the discerning, nor favor to the skillful; for time and chance overtake them all.

Again, I observed this on the earth: the race is not always won by the swiftest, the battle is not always won by the strongest; prosperity does not always belong to those who are the wisest, wealth does not always belong to those who are the most discerning, nor does success always come to those with the most knowledge– for time and chance may overcome them all.

耶和華說：「智者不要誇耀自己的智慧，勇士不要誇耀自己的力量，富人不要誇耀自己的財富。

任何智慧、悟性和謀略，都不能對抗耶和華。馬為爭戰之日預備，勝敗由耶和華決定。

若非主許可，誰的話可以兌現呢？禍福豈不都出自至高者的口嗎？

祂提拔卑微的人，庇護哀痛的人。祂挫敗狡猾人的陰謀，使他們無法得逞。祂使智者中了自己的詭計，使奸徒的計謀迅速落空。他們白天遇到黑暗，午間摸索如在夜晚。

快捷的無法逃遁，強壯的無力可施，勇猛的救不了自己，拉弓的站立不住，腿快的無法逃脫，騎馬的救不了自己。到那日，最勇猛的戰士也要丟盔棄甲，倉皇逃命。這是耶和華說的。

我心裡想：「不論義人或惡人，上帝必審判，因為萬事萬務都有受審之時。」

他說：「全體猶大人、耶路撒冷的居民和約沙法王啊，你們要留心聽！耶和華對你們如此說，『你們不要因敵軍強大而恐懼驚慌，因為戰爭的勝敗不在乎你們，而在乎上帝。

我知道，上帝所做的都會存到永遠，誰也不能增減。祂這樣安排是叫人敬畏祂。

善跑者跑不掉，強壯者逃不了，他們仆倒在北面的幼發拉底河邊。

君王不能靠兵多取勝，勇士不能憑力大獲救。靠戰馬取勝實屬妄想，馬雖力大也不能救人。

耶和華所喜悅的不是強健的馬匹，也不是矯捷的戰士，而是敬畏祂、仰望祂慈愛的人。

智者高瞻遠矚，愚人卻在黑暗中摸索。但我知道兩者終必有同樣的命運。於是，我想：「既然愚人的命運也將是我的命運，我有智慧又怎麼樣呢？我只能說，『這也是虛空。』」

我又看見人的一切勞碌和成就原是出於爭強好勝。這也是虛空，如同捕風。

亞希多弗見自己的提議不被接納，便備上驢，啟程回鄉，安頓好家事以後，就自縊身亡了。他被安葬在他父親的墓穴裡。

押沙龍和以色列眾人都說：「亞基人戶篩的主意比亞希多弗的好！」其實是耶和華決定破壞亞希多弗的巧計，好把災禍降在押沙龍身上。

於是，我又觀察日光之下的一切欺壓之事。我看見受欺壓的淚流滿面，無人安慰。因為欺壓者有權有勢，所以無人安慰他們。

於是，我轉念思考什麼是智慧、狂妄和愚昧。其實以後接替君王的人除了重演歷史之外，還能做什麼呢？

不要再驕橫傲慢、口出狂言，因為耶和華鑒察萬事，祂會按著人的行為施行審判。勇士的弓被折斷，軟弱的變為剛強。素來豐衣足食的為糊口而當雇工，本來食不果腹的卻不再挨餓。不育的婦人現在生了七個孩子，兒女成群的婦人卻子女盡失。耶和華掌管生死，祂使人進入墳墓，也使人起死回生。貧窮富足在於祂，卑微高貴也在於祂。祂從灰塵中提拔窮苦的人，從糞堆裡擢升貧賤的人，使他們與王子同坐，得享尊榮。大地的根基屬於耶和華，祂在上面建立了世界。祂保護祂的聖民，使惡人在黑暗中滅亡，因為得勝不是靠人的勇力。跟耶和華對抗的人必被擊潰，祂必從天上用雷擊打他。祂必審判天下，賜力量給祂所立的君王，使祂所膏立的人大有權柄。」

我們也在基督裡被揀選成為祂的子民。這都是按自己旨意行萬事的上帝預先定下的計劃，

他們把驕傲作項鏈戴在頸上，把暴力作外袍裹在身上。他們胖得眼睛凸出，心中充滿罪惡。

要記住，是你們的上帝耶和華賜給你們致富的能力，為要堅立祂給你們祖先的誓約，正如今日的情形。

你應當思想上帝的作為，因為上帝弄彎的，誰能使它變直呢？

那時，你們將再度看出義人與惡人之間的區別，事奉上帝者和不事奉上帝者之間的不同。

但祂若保持緘默，誰能定祂有罪？祂若掩起臉來，誰能看得見祂？個人和國家都靠祂垂顧，

世人都微不足道，祂在天軍和世人中獨行其道，無人能攔阻祂的手，或質問祂的作為。

當時，洗魯雅的三個兒子約押、亞比篩和亞撒黑都在場。亞撒黑跑得飛快如鹿，他跟在押尼珥後面，不偏不離，窮追不捨。押尼珥回頭問道：「你是亞撒黑嗎？」亞撒黑說：「正是。」押尼珥說：「你去追趕別人，奪取他的兵器吧。」但亞撒黑還是窮追不捨。押尼珥又對他說：「快走開吧，非逼我殺你嗎？我若殺了你，還有何顏面見你哥哥約押呢？」但亞撒黑還是不肯甘休。押尼珥就用槍柄刺入他的肚腹，穿透了他的後背，他便倒地身亡。眾人趕到那裡，都停了下來。

大衛就這樣不用刀劍，只用投石器和一塊石子戰勝了那個非利士人，殺死了他。
