All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own hurt.

I understood all these things. I used my mind to study everything that’s done on earth. A man sometimes makes life hard for others. But he ends up hurting himself.

All this I observed while applying my heart to all that is done under the sun, when man had power over man to his hurt.

I have thought deeply about all that goes on here under the sun, where people have the power to hurt each other.

我看日光之下有一宗大禍患：就是財富積守着、反而害到財主；

我又看日光之下有一件虛空的事：有人孤單無二：沒有兒子也沒有弟兄，他的一切勞碌永無了結，他的眼目也從未以財富為足，以致他從未自問：我勞勞碌碌、薄於自奉，而不享樂，到底為的是誰？這也是虛空，是極喫力的勞苦。

有人告訴埃及王說：『以色列民逃走了。』法老和他臣僕對以色列民的心就變了；他們說：『我們讓以色列人走、不再服事我們，我們作了這事甚麼緣故呢？』法老就套上車輛，帶着兵丁一同去，並帶着六百輛特選的車、和埃及所有的車，都有軍官在車上。永恆主使埃及王法老的心頑強，法老就追趕以色列人，以色列人卻以高舉的手出來了。埃及人追趕他們；法老一切的馬匹、車輛、和他的馬兵跟軍隊、就在海邊上靠近比哈希錄、巴力洗分前面、他們紮營的地方，趕上了他們。

我見過日光之下所發生過的一切事；啊，都是虛空！都是捕風！

但是希實本王西宏不情願容我們從他那裏經過，因為永恆主你的上帝使他的靈剛愎、心意頑固，為要將他交在你手中、像今日一樣。

你固然是擊敗了以東人了，你卻心高氣傲。你只管自以為榮，在家裏呆着吧；又為甚麼要惹禍，使你覆亡，使你和猶大國跟你一同覆亡呢？』亞瑪謝不聽這話。於是以色列王約阿施就上陣來、他和猶大王亞瑪謝就在猶大的伯示麥彼此見面了。猶大人在以色列人面前被擊敗，各自逃回家去。

水一回流，淹沒了車輛和馬兵、以及法老的全軍，那些跟着以色列人下海裏去的，連一個也沒有剩下。

又在西底家眼前將他兒子們都宰殺掉，並將西底家一對眼睛都弄瞎了，然後用銅鍊鎖着他，帶到巴比倫去。

我看上帝將勞苦的事給人類，使他們在其中去勞碌。

我心裏轉來轉去要知道、要窺探、要尋求智慧和萬事的總和，要知道邪惡是愚頑，愚昧是狂妄。
