As no one has power over the wind to contain it, so no one has power over the time of their death. As no one is discharged in time of war, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

No one can stop the wind from blowing. And no one has the power to decide when they will die. No one is let out of the army in times of war. And evil won’t let go of those who practice it.

No man has power to retain the spirit, or power over the day of death. There is no discharge from war, nor will wickedness deliver those who are given to it.

None of us can hold back our spirit from departing. None of us has the power to prevent the day of our death. There is no escaping that obligation, that dark battle. And in the face of death, wickedness will certainly not rescue the wicked.

For you said,“ We have made a covenant with Death, and we have an agreement with Sheol; when the overwhelming catastrophe passes through, it will not touch us, because we have made falsehood our refuge and have hidden behind treachery.”

And just as it is appointed for people to die once— and after this, judgment—

The wicked one is thrown down by his own sin, but the righteous one has a refuge in his death.

What courageous person can live and never see death? Who can save himself from the power of Sheol? Selah

For he was crucified in weakness, but he lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by God’s power.

The wicked will return to Sheol— all the nations that forget God.

They trust in their wealth and boast of their abundant riches.Yet these cannot redeem a person or pay his ransom to God—since the price of redeeming him is too costly, one should forever stop trying—so that he may live forever and not see the Pit.

Indeed, you put them in slippery places; you make them fall into ruin.How suddenly they become a desolation! They come to an end, swept away by terrors.Like one waking from a dream, Lord, when arising, you will despise their image.When I became embittered and my innermost being was wounded,I was stupid and didn’t understand; I was an unthinking animal toward you.Yet I am always with you; you hold my right hand.You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me up in glory.Who do I have in heaven but you? And I desire nothing on earth but you.My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever.Those far from you will certainly perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.But as for me, God’s presence is my good. I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, so I can tell about all you do.

sown in dishonor, raised in glory; sown in weakness, raised in power;

Your covenant with Death will be dissolved, and your agreement with Sheol will not last. When the overwhelming catastrophe passes through, you will be trampled.

If he put his mind to it and withdrew the spirit and breath he gave,

We will certainly die and be like water poured out on the ground, which can’t be recovered. But God would not take away a life; he would devise plans so that the one banished from him does not remain banished.

This is why God will bring you down forever. He will take you, ripping you out of your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. SelahThe righteous will see and fear, and they will derisively say about that hero,“ Here is the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his riches, taking refuge in his destructive behavior.”

So they followed them as far as the Jordan. They saw that the whole way was littered with clothes and equipment the Arameans had thrown off in their haste. The messengers returned and told the king.

Who knows if the spirits of the children of Adam go upward and the spirits of animals go downward to the earth?

“ When you go out to war against your enemies and see horses, chariots, and an army larger than yours, do not be afraid of them, for the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you.When you are about to engage in battle, the priest is to come forward and address the army.He is to say to them,‘ Listen, Israel: Today you are about to engage in battle with your enemies. Do not be cowardly. Do not be afraid, alarmed, or terrified because of them.For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.’“ The officers are to address the army,‘ Has any man built a new house and not dedicated it? Let him leave and return home. Otherwise, he may die in battle and another man dedicate it.Has any man planted a vineyard and not begun to enjoy its fruit? Let him leave and return home. Otherwise he may die in battle and another man enjoy its fruit.Has any man become engaged to a woman and not married her? Let him leave and return home. Otherwise he may die in battle and another man marry her.’The officers will continue to address the army and say,‘ Is there any man who is afraid or cowardly? Let him leave and return home, so that his brothers won’t lose heart as he did.’
