There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just[ men], unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked[ men], to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also[ is] vanity.

世間更有一患事、即有善人遭惡人所當遭者、有惡人遇善人所當遇者、我則曰、此亦屬於虛、

There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless.

Here’s something else on this earth that doesn’t have any meaning. Sometimes godly people get what sinful people should receive. And sinful people get what godly people should receive. Here’s what I’m telling you. That doesn’t have any meaning either.

There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.

And this is not all that is meaningless in our world. In this life, good people are often treated as though they were wicked, and wicked people are often treated as though they were good. This is so meaningless!

There is a futility that is done on the earth: there are righteous people who get what the actions of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked people who get what the actions of the righteous deserve. I say that this too is futile.

There is futility which is done on the earth, that is, there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked. On the other hand, there are evil people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I say that this too is futility.

All[ things] have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just[ man] that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked[ man] that prolongeth[ his life] in his wickedness.

The wise man’s eyes[ are] in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.

And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea,[ they that] tempt God are even delivered.

Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?

For I was envious at the foolish,[ when] I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works,[ are] in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred[ by] all[ that is] before them.All[ things come] alike to all:[ there is] one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as[ is] the good, so[ is] the sinner;[ and] he that sweareth, as[ he] that feareth an oath.This[ is] an evil among all[ things] that are done under the sun, that[ there is] one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness[ is] in their heart while they live, and after that[ they go] to the dead.

Behold, these[ are] the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase[ in] riches.Verily I have cleansed my heart[ in] vain, and washed my hands in innocency.For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.

There is one[ alone], and[ there is] not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet[ is there] no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither[ saith he], For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This[ is] also vanity, yea, it[ is] a sore travail.

How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and[ how oft] cometh their destruction upon them![ God] distributeth sorrows in his anger.They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know[ it].His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.For what pleasure[ hath] he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?Shall[ any] teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices[ which] ye wrongfully imagine against me.For ye say, Where[ is] the house of the prince? and where[ are] the dwelling places of the wicked?Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens,That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him[ what] he hath done?Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as[ there are] innumerable before him.How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?

He evil entreateth the barren[ that] beareth not: and doeth not good to the widow.He draweth also the mighty with his power: he riseth up, and no[ man] is sure of life.[ Though] it be given him[ to be] in safety, whereon he resteth; yet his eyes[ are] upon their ways.They are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all[ other], and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.And if[ it be] not[ so] now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech nothing worth?

There is an evil[ which] I have seen under the sun, as an error[ which] proceedeth from the ruler:

Righteous[ art] thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of[ thy] judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper?[ wherefore] are all they happy that deal very treacherously?

Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This[ is] also vanity and vexation of spirit.

This[ is] one[ thing], therefore I said[ it], He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where,[ and] who[ is] he?
