世上有一件虚空的事，就是义人所遭遇的，反照恶人所行的；又有恶人所遭遇的，反照义人所行的。我说，这也是虚空。

There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless.

Here’s something else on this earth that doesn’t have any meaning. Sometimes godly people get what sinful people should receive. And sinful people get what godly people should receive. Here’s what I’m telling you. That doesn’t have any meaning either.

There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.

And this is not all that is meaningless in our world. In this life, good people are often treated as though they were wicked, and wicked people are often treated as though they were good. This is so meaningless!

There is a futility that is done on the earth: there are righteous people who get what the actions of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked people who get what the actions of the righteous deserve. I say that this too is futile.

There is futility which is done on the earth, that is, there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked. On the other hand, there are evil people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I say that this too is futility.

There is a vanity which occurs on earth, that there are just men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.

There is a vanity which is done upon the earth, that there are righteous men unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.

在我虚空的日子里，我看到这一切：有义人在他的公义中死亡，有恶人在他的邪恶中长寿。

智慧人看得见他的道路，愚昧人却在黑暗中行走。不过我也明白，同样的命运会临到他们这两种人。

所以我们就称傲慢的人有福；作恶的人不仅得以兴旺，他们试验神也得以逃脱。’”

因为我看到恶人享平安时，就嫉妒那些狂傲的人。

因此我把这一切放在心上，为要察验这些事：义人、智慧人和他们所做的都在神的手中；那将临到他们的一切，无论是爱是恨，没有人知道。每个人的命运都是一样的：义人与恶人，好人与坏人，洁净的与不洁净的，献祭的与不献祭的都有一样的命运。好人怎样，罪人也怎样；起誓的怎样，怕起誓的也怎样。在日光之下发生的一切事中，有一种祸患，就是每个人都有一样的命运；并且世人的心充满了恶事；他们一生心里狂妄，之后就归到死人那里。

看哪，恶人就是这样——他们总是生活安稳，财富增添。即使我保持心纯洁，洗净双手表明清白，也都是徒然的！我终日遭受击打，每天清晨遭受责备。

有一个人孤单无伴，连儿子和兄弟也没有；但他各样的劳苦却没有穷尽，他的眼目也不因财富而满足；他问：“我如此劳苦，也不让自己过好日子，到底是为了谁呢？”这也是虚空，是极重的担子！

我看到在日光之下有一种祸患，好像是出自掌权者无意的过错：

我也看到，一切的劳苦和各样工作的技能，都是出于人与邻人之间的嫉妒。这也是虚空，也是捕风！
