愚人的笑聲像鍋底下燒荊棘的噼啪聲。這也是虛空。

愚昧人的笑聲，就像鍋底下荊棘的爆聲一樣。這也是虛空。

鍋底下荊棘的爆裂聲怎麼樣，愚頑人的笑聲也怎麼樣：這也是虛空。

愚者之笑、猶釜底焚荊棘之聲、斯亦虛空、

愚人之笑、如荊棘、為爨火所焚、莫非捕風也。

愚者之笑聲、猶荊棘焚於釜下之聲、此亦屬於虛、

Like the crackling of thorns under the pot, so is the laughter of fools. This too is meaningless.

A foolish person’s laughter is like the crackling of thorns burning under a pot. That doesn’t have any meaning either.

A fool’s laughter is quickly gone, like thorns crackling in a fire. This also is meaningless.

Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns, he will sweep away the green and the burning alike.

I said of laughter,“ It is foolishness;” and of mirth,“ What does it accomplish?”

receiving the wages of unrighteousness; people who count it pleasure to revel in the daytime, spots and defects, reveling in their deceit while they feast with you;having eyes full of adultery, and who can’t cease from sin; enticing unsettled souls; having a heart trained in greed; children of cursing;forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of wrongdoing;but he was rebuked for his own disobedience. A mute donkey spoke with a man’s voice and stopped the madness of the prophet.These are wells without water, clouds driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness has been reserved forever.

These are hidden rocky reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you, shepherds who without fear feed themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;wild waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the blackness of darkness has been reserved forever.

If a wise man goes to court with a foolish man, the fool rages or scoffs, and there is no peace.

I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will make you wear sackcloth on all your bodies, and baldness on every head. I will make it like the mourning for an only son, and its end like a bitter day.

Woe to you, you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
