Frustration is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the heart.

Not being able to figure things out is better than laughter. That’s because sorrow is good for the heart.

Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of face the heart is made glad.

Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, double-minded people!Be miserable and mourn and weep. Your laughter must change to mourning and your joy to sorrow.Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.

Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy.Though one goes along weeping, carrying the bag of seed, he will surely come back with shouts of joy, carrying his sheaves.

Watch! I am going to bring them from the northern land. I will gather them from remote regions of the earth— the blind and the lame will be with them, along with those who are pregnant and those about to give birth. They will return here as a great assembly!They will come weeping, but I will bring them back with consolation. I will lead them to wadis filled with water by a smooth way where they will not stumble, for I am Israel’s Father, and Ephraim is My firstborn.

“ Then I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on the house of David and the residents of Jerusalem, and they will look at Me whom they pierced. They will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child and weep bitterly for Him as one weeps for a firstborn.On that day the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great as the mourning of Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo.The land will mourn, every family by itself: the family of David’s house by itself and their women by themselves; the family of Nathan’s house by itself and their women by themselves;the family of Levi’s house by itself and their women by themselves; the family of Shimei by itself and their women by themselves;all the remaining families, every family by itself, and their women by themselves.

“ I assure you: You will weep and wail, but the world will rejoice. You will become sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy.When a woman is in labor she has pain because her time has come. But when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the suffering because of the joy that a person has been born into the world.So you also have sorrow now. But I will see you again. Your hearts will rejoice, and no one will rob you of your joy.

For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but He does it for our benefit, so that we can share His holiness.No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the fruit of peace and righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

It was good for me to be afflicted so that I could learn Your statutes.

For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory.

This is what the Lord says: A voice was heard in Ramah, a lament with bitter weeping— Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted for her children because they are no more.This is what the Lord says: Keep your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for the reward for your work will come— this is the Lord’s declaration— and your children will return from the enemy’s land.There is hope for your future— this is the Lord’s declaration— and your children will return to their own territory.I have heard Ephraim moaning,“ You disciplined me, and I have been disciplined like an untrained calf. Restore me, and I will return, for you, Lord, are my God.After I returned, I repented; After I was instructed, I struck my thigh in grief. I was ashamed and humiliated because I bore the disgrace of my youth.”Isn’t Ephraim a precious son to Me, a delightful child? Whenever I speak against him, I certainly still think about him. Therefore, My inner being yearns for him; I will truly have compassion on him. This is the Lord’s declaration.

Woe to you who are now full, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are now laughing, for you will mourn and weep.

Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Your word.

In those days I, Daniel, was mourning for three full weeks.I didn’t eat any rich food, no meat or wine entered my mouth, and I didn’t put any oil on my body until the three weeks were over.

Consider it a great joy, my brothers, whenever you experience various trials,knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.But endurance must do its complete work, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.

He said,“ Don’t be afraid, you who are treasured by God. Peace to you; be very strong!” As he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said,“ Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.”

In those days and at that time— this is the Lord’s declaration— the Israelites and Judeans will come together, weeping as they come, and will seek the Lord their God.They will ask about Zion, turning their faces to this road. They will come and join themselves to the Lord in an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten.

You who are now hungry are blessed, because you will be filled. You who now weep are blessed, because you will laugh.

So I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer and petitions, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed: Ah, Lord— the great and awe-inspiring God who keeps His gracious covenant with those who love Him and keep His commands—we have sinned, done wrong, acted wickedly, rebelled, and turned away from Your commands and ordinances.We have not listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, leaders, fathers, and all the people of the land.Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but this day public shame belongs to us: the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel— those who are near and those who are far, in all the countries where You have dispersed them because of the disloyalty they have shown toward You.Lord, public shame belongs to us, our kings, our leaders, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You.Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled against Himand have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by following His instructions that He set before us through His servants the prophets.All Israel has broken Your law and turned away, refusing to obey You. The promised curse written in the law of Moses, the servant of God, has been poured out on us because we have sinned against Him.He has carried out His words that He spoke against us and against our rulers by bringing on us so great a disaster that nothing like what has been done to Jerusalem has ever been done under all of heaven.Just as it is written in the law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not appeased the Lord our God by turning from our iniquities and paying attention to Your truth.So the Lord kept the disaster in mind and brought it on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in all He has done. But we have not obeyed Him.Now, Lord our God, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and made Your name renowned as it is this day, we have sinned, we have acted wickedly.Lord, in keeping with all Your righteous acts, may Your anger and wrath turn away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; for because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people have become an object of ridicule to all those around us.Therefore, our God, hear the prayer and the petitions of Your servant. Show Your favor to Your desolate sanctuary for the Lord’s sake.Listen, my God, and hear. Open Your eyes and see our desolations and the city called by Your name. For we are not presenting our petitions before You based on our righteous acts, but based on Your abundant compassion.Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, listen and act! My God, for Your own sake, do not delay, because Your city and Your people are called by Your name.
