Don’t claim to be better than you are. And don’t claim to be wiser than you are. Why destroy yourself?

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic.For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.

Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.

and again,“ The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”

“ They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing, and saying,‘ Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! For in one hour she is made desolate.’

For an empty-headed man will be wise, When a wild donkey’s colt is born a man.

See! Your house is left to you desolate;

But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments.

These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

Do not overwork to be rich; Because of your own understanding, cease!

Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”

And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh.

For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

“ Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.“ And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

And to man He said,‘ Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, And to depart from evil is understanding.’”

“ Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”He answered and said to them,“ Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?For God commanded, saying,‘ Honor your father and your mother’; and,‘ He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’But you say,‘ Whoever says to his father or mother,“ Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”—then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:‘ These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,

Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
