Don’t claim to be better than you are. And don’t claim to be wiser than you are. Why destroy yourself?

Be not overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself?

regarding zeal, persecuting the church; regarding the righteousness that is in the law, blameless.

Who is wise and has understanding among you? He should show his works by good conduct with wisdom’s gentleness.But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t brag and deny the truth.Such wisdom does not come from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.For where envy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every kind of evil.But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without favoritism and hypocrisy.

No one should deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks he is wise in this age, he must become foolish so that he can become wise.

and again, The Lord knows that the reasonings of the wise are meaningless.

They threw dust on their heads and kept crying out, weeping, and mourning: Woe, woe, the great city, where all those who have ships on the sea became rich from her wealth, for in a single hour she was destroyed.

But a stupid man will gain understanding as soon as a wild donkey is born a man!

See, your house is left to you desolate.

They do everything to be observed by others: They enlarge their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.

Although these have a reputation of wisdom by promoting ascetic practices, humility, and severe treatment of the body, they are not of any value in curbing self-indulgence.

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You pay a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin, yet you have neglected the more important matters of the law— justice, mercy, and faith. These things should have been done without neglecting the others.Blind guides! You strain out a gnat, yet gulp down a camel!

They forbid marriage and demand abstinence from foods that God created to be received with gratitude by those who believe and know the truth.

Don’t wear yourself out to get rich; stop giving your attention to it.

Then John’s disciples came to Him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”

But beyond these, my son, be warned: there is no end to the making of many books, and much study wearies the body.

So that you will not be conceited, brothers, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery: A partial hardening has come to Israel until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.

I can testify about them that they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

“ Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of people, to be seen by them. I assure you: They’ve got their reward!But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.When you pray, don’t babble like the idolaters, since they imagine they’ll be heard for their many words.

He said to mankind,“ The fear of the Lord is this: wisdom. And to turn from evil is understanding.”

“ Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat!”He answered them,“ And why do you break God’s commandment because of your tradition?For God said: Honor your father and your mother; and, The one who speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.But you say,‘ Whoever tells his father or mother,“ Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple”—he does not have to honor his father.’ In this way, you have revoked God’s word because of your tradition.Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said:These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commands of men.”

Then the woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,

Let no one disqualify you, insisting on ascetic practices and the worship of angels, claiming access to a visionary realm and inflated without cause by his unspiritual mind.
