For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days they pass through like a shadow? Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?

Who knows what’s good for a person? They live for only a few meaningless days. They pass through life like a shadow. Who can tell them what will happen on earth after they are gone?

For who knows what is good for man while he lives the few days of his vain life, which he passes like a shadow? For who can tell man what will be after him under the sun?

獨是明日之事、爾且弗能知、爾命伊何、猶雲霧聚散倏忽、出沒頃刻、

若花之向榮、而遭翦伐、若影之倏忽、而無定在。

予自謂得耶和華佑、猶可冀望兮。凡瞻望耶和華、求沾恩澤者、耶和華善視之兮。惟耶和華是賴、望其拯救、必蒙福祉兮。自幼負軛、猶以為幸兮。

惟我竊思、人既勤勞以得之、莫若安樂以享之、厥後之事、難以逆睹。

惡人不畏上帝、斷難邀福、厥日無幾、如影靡定。

斯世之人、如氣呼吸、人之生命、如影沉西兮、

予之生命、廣約一掌、自爾視之、一若無物、人雖完體、實則氣而已。各人所為、無非捉影、諠譟徒勞兮、積累財貨、不知孰得兮。

氣之呼吸不能自主、死之猝至、亦不自持、在彼疆場、不能倖免、多行強暴、終難逭罰。

人生歲數、無過七十、如體壯健、可冀八旬、雖以遐齡自詡、而已晚景之彌艱、生命將絕、如鳥高飛、倏忽不見兮、孰知爾怒震烈、而敬乎其所當敬兮、余生於世、為日無多、祈爾指示、致志於道兮、

惟我行義、望爾榮光、其興也勃然、克覿爾面、則余之願盈焉。

人壽幾何、請爾垂念、爾造世人、同歸於盡、寧非徒勞兮、

余之生命、如影沉西、如草凋零兮、

曰人所當為者、言之已彰彰矣、耶和華願爾無他、惟秉公義、矜憫為懷、退抑以事上帝。

所好惡所艷羨者、悉歸無有、天下所經營、與彼無與、

昔我列祖為賓旅於爾前、我儕亦然、我生命如影、難冀其長存。

余命將絕、如影沉西、亦猶蝗蟲、靡有定所兮、

民之多言、謂誰福我兮。予曰、願耶和華色相之光華、於我而普照。

子孫之榮辱、俱不及知。

事之大略、爾其聽之、寅畏上帝、守其誡命、此人之大端。

彼愛雅各、簡此腴地、錫我為業兮。

我姑以酒為懽、若無智然、而仍不敢失度、庶知人生在世、最樂者何事。

我得耶和華以為真福、如酒之盈樽兮、所得之福、既永且久、爾使之然兮、
