If you see the poor oppressed in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things; for one official is eyed by a higher one, and over them both are others higher still.

Suppose you see poor people being mistreated somewhere. And what is being done to them isn’t right or fair. Don’t be surprised by that. One official is watched by a higher one. Officials who are even higher are watching both of them.

If you see in a province the oppression of the poor and the violation of justice and righteousness, do not be amazed at the matter, for the high official is watched by a higher, and there are yet higher ones over them.

Moreover I saw under the sun: In the place of judgment, Wickedness was there; And in the place of righteousness, Iniquity was there.

God stands in the congregation of the mighty; He judges among the gods.

You shall speak to him, saying,‘ Thus says the Lord:“ Have you murdered and also taken possession?”’ And you shall speak to him, saying,‘ Thus says the Lord:“ In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs shall lick your blood, even yours.”’”So Ahab said to Elijah,“ Have you found me, O my enemy?” And he answered,“ I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of the Lord:

Go over to Calneh and see; And from there go to Hamath the great; Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory?Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near;Who lie on beds of ivory, Stretch out on your couches, Eat lambs from the flock And calves from the midst of the stall;Who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments, And invent for yourselves musical instruments like David;Who drink wine from bowls, And anoint yourselves with the best ointments, But are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me.

And the angel answered and said to her,“ The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

What do you mean by crushing My people And grinding the faces of the poor?” Says the Lord GOD of hosts.

Do horses run on rocks? Does one plow there with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into gall, And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood,

Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying,“ Arise quickly!” And his chains fell off his hands.Then the angel said to him,“ Gird yourself and tie on your sandals”; and so he did. And he said to him,“ Put on your garment and follow me.”So he went out and followed him, and did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.When they were past the first and the second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened to them of its own accord; and they went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.

The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness,and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

“ Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger And the staff in whose hand is My indignation.I will send him against an ungodly nation, And against the people of My wrath I will give him charge, To seize the spoil, to take the prey, And to tread them down like the mire of the streets.Yet he does not mean so, Nor does his heart think so; But it is in his heart to destroy, And cut off not a few nations.

I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement.But the angel said to me,“ Why did you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns.

He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.

Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues, For I have seen violence and strife in the city.

Are there yet the treasures of wickedness In the house of the wicked, And the short measure that is an abomination?Shall I count pure those with the wicked scales, And with the bag of deceitful weights?For her rich men are full of violence, Her inhabitants have spoken lies, And their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.“ Therefore I will also make you sick by striking you, By making you desolate because of your sins.

Then the angel of the Lord went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses— all dead.

Are You not from everlasting, O Lord my God, my Holy One? We shall not die. O Lord, You have appointed them for judgment; O Rock, You have marked them for correction.You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, And cannot look on wickedness. Why do You look on those who deal treacherously, And hold Your tongue when the wicked devours A person more righteous than he?

For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

In transgressing and lying against the Lord, And departing from our God, Speaking oppression and revolt, Conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.Justice is turned back, And righteousness stands afar off; For truth is fallen in the street, And equity cannot enter.So truth fails, And he who departs from evil makes himself a prey. Then the Lord saw it, and it displeased Him That there was no justice.He saw that there was no man, And wondered that there was no intercessor; Therefore His own arm brought salvation for Him; And His own righteousness, it sustained Him.

O Lord, how long shall I cry, And You will not hear? Even cry out to You,“ Violence!” And You will not save.Why do You show me iniquity, And cause me to see trouble? For plundering and violence are before me; There is strife, and contention arises.

For what is the hope of the hypocrite, Though he may gain much, If God takes away his life?Will God hear his cry When trouble comes upon him?Will he delight himself in the Almighty? Will he always call on God?“ I will teach you about the hand of God; What is with the Almighty I will not conceal.Surely all of you have seen it; Why then do you behave with complete nonsense?“ This is the portion of a wicked man with God, And the heritage of oppressors, received from the Almighty:If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword; And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.Those who survive him shall be buried in death, And their widows shall not weep,Though he heaps up silver like dust, And piles up clothing like clay—He may pile it up, but the just will wear it, And the innocent will divide the silver.He builds his house like a moth, Like a booth which a watchman makes.The rich man will lie down, But not be gathered up; He opens his eyes, And he is no more.Terrors overtake him like a flood; A tempest steals him away in the night.The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; It sweeps him out of his place.It hurls against him and does not spare; He flees desperately from its power.Men shall clap their hands at him, And shall hiss him out of his place.

For I know your manifold transgressions And your mighty sins: Afflicting the just and taking bribes; Diverting the poor from justice at the gate.

That they may know that You, whose name alone is the Lord, Are the Most High over all the earth.

“ Look, the princes of Israel: each one has used his power to shed blood in you.In you they have made light of father and mother; in your midst they have oppressed the stranger; in you they have mistreated the fatherless and the widow.You have despised My holy things and profaned My Sabbaths.In you are men who slander to cause bloodshed; in you are those who eat on the mountains; in your midst they commit lewdness.In you men uncover their fathers’ nakedness; in you they violate women who are set apart during their impurity.One commits abomination with his neighbor’s wife; another lewdly defiles his daughter-in-law; and another in you violates his sister, his father’s daughter.In you they take bribes to shed blood; you take usury and increase; you have made profit from your neighbors by extortion, and have forgotten Me,” says the Lord GOD.“ Behold, therefore, I beat My fists at the dishonest profit which you have made, and at the bloodshed which has been in your midst.Can your heart endure, or can your hands remain strong, in the days when I shall deal with you? I, the Lord, have spoken, and will do it.

Hear this, you who swallow up the needy, And make the poor of the land fail,Saying:“ When will the New Moon be past, That we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, That we may trade wheat? Making the ephah small and the shekel large, Falsifying the scales by deceit,That we may buy the poor for silver, And the needy for a pair of sandals— Even sell the bad wheat?”The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob:“ Surely I will never forget any of their works.

“ Thus says the Lord of hosts:‘ If it is marvelous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, Will it also be marvelous in My eyes?’ Says the Lord of hosts.

For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:“ I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will prepare their heart; You will cause Your ear to hear,To do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, That the man of the earth may oppress no more.

The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance; He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked,So that men will say,“ Surely there is a reward for the righteous; Surely He is God who judges in the earth.”

And I will come near you for judgment; I will be a swift witness Against sorcerers, Against adulterers, Against perjurers, Against those who exploit wage earners and widows and orphans, And against those who turn away an alien— Because they do not fear Me,” Says the Lord of hosts.

Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying,‘ My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure,’Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man who executes My counsel, from a far country. Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it.

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!

Woe to those who devise iniquity, And work out evil on their beds! At morning light they practice it, Because it is in the power of their hand.They covet fields and take them by violence, Also houses, and seize them. So they oppress a man and his house, A man and his inheritance.Therefore thus says the Lord:“ Behold, against this family I am devising disaster, From which you cannot remove your necks; Nor shall you walk haughtily, For this is an evil time.

“ For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered togetherto do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done.

For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, And the men of Judah are His pleasant plant. He looked for justice, but behold, oppression; For righteousness, but behold, a cry for help.

Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Lord has performed all His work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, that He will say,“ I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his haughty looks.”

And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was destroying, the Lord looked and relented of the disaster, and said to the angel who was destroying,“ It is enough; now restrain your hand.” And the angel of the Lord stood by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.Then David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of the Lord standing between earth and heaven, having in his hand a drawn sword stretched out over Jerusalem. So David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.

Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you;

“ And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,

And I said:“ Hear now, O heads of Jacob, And you rulers of the house of Israel: Is it not for you to know justice?You who hate good and love evil; Who strip the skin from My people, And the flesh from their bones;Who also eat the flesh of My people, Flay their skin from them, Break their bones, And chop them in pieces Like meat for the pot, Like flesh in the caldron.”Then they will cry to the Lord, But He will not hear them; He will even hide His face from them at that time, Because they have been evil in their deeds.

For the Lord is the great God, And the great King above all gods.

Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter.You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain.

Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you.

Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died.

“ Yet your eyes and your heart are for nothing but your covetousness, For shedding innocent blood, And practicing oppression and violence.”Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:“ They shall not lament for him, Saying,‘ Alas, my brother!’ or‘ Alas, my sister!’“ They shall not lament for him, Saying,‘ Alas, master!’ or‘ Alas, his glory!’He shall be buried with the burial of a donkey, Dragged and cast out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

The women of My people you cast out From their pleasant houses; From their children You have taken away My glory forever.

“ Thus says the Lord of hosts:‘ Execute true justice, Show mercy and compassion Everyone to his brother.Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, The alien or the poor. Let none of you plan evil in his heart Against his brother.’“ But they refused to heed, shrugged their shoulders, and stopped their ears so that they could not hear.Yes, they made their hearts like flint, refusing to hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Thus great wrath came from the Lord of hosts.Therefore it happened, that just as He proclaimed and they would not hear, so they called out and I would not listen,” says the Lord of hosts.

Let not a slanderer be established in the earth; Let evil hunt the violent man to overthrow him.”I know that the Lord will maintain The cause of the afflicted, And justice for the poor.

Now hear this, You heads of the house of Jacob And rulers of the house of Israel, Who abhor justice And pervert all equity,Who build up Zion with bloodshed And Jerusalem with iniquity:Her heads judge for a bribe, Her priests teach for pay, And her prophets divine for money. Yet they lean on the Lord, and say,“ Is not the Lord among us? No harm can come upon us.”Therefore because of you Zion shall be plowed like a field, Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins, And the mountain of the temple Like the bare hills of the forest.

For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor, He has violently seized a house which he did not build.“ Because he knows no quietness in his heart, He will not save anything he desires.Nothing is left for him to eat; Therefore his well-being will not last.In his self-sufficiency he will be in distress; Every hand of misery will come against him.When he is about to fill his stomach, God will cast on him the fury of His wrath, And will rain it on him while he is eating.He will flee from the iron weapon; A bronze bow will pierce him through.It is drawn, and comes out of the body; Yes, the glittering point comes out of his gall. Terrors come upon him;Total darkness is reserved for his treasures. An unfanned fire will consume him; It shall go ill with him who is left in his tent.The heavens will reveal his iniquity, And the earth will rise up against him.The increase of his house will depart, And his goods will flow away in the day of His wrath.This is the portion from God for a wicked man, The heritage appointed to him by God.”
