If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for[ he that is] higher than the highest regardeth; and[ there be] higher than they.

If you see the poor oppressed in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things; for one official is eyed by a higher one, and over them both are others higher still.

Suppose you see poor people being mistreated somewhere. And what is being done to them isn’t right or fair. Don’t be surprised by that. One official is watched by a higher one. Officials who are even higher are watching both of them.

If you see in a province the oppression of the poor and the violation of justice and righteousness, do not be amazed at the matter, for the high official is watched by a higher, and there are yet higher ones over them.

Don’t be surprised if you see a poor person being oppressed by the powerful and if justice is being miscarried throughout the land. For every official is under orders from higher up, and matters of justice get lost in red tape and bureaucracy.

Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines:[ be they] better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;That chant to the sound of the viol,[ and] invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

What mean ye[ that] ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

Shall horses run upon the rock? will[ one] plow[ there] with oxen? for ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:

And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon[ him], and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from[ his] hands.And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but[ it is] in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

Destroy, O Lord,[ and] divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.

Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure[ that is] abominable?Shall I count[ them] pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue[ is] deceitful in their mouth.Therefore also will I make[ thee] sick in smiting thee, in making[ thee] desolate because of thy sins.

Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they[ were] all dead corpses.

[ Art] thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.[ Thou art] of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously,[ and] holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth[ the man that is] more righteous than he?

For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.Yea, truth faileth; and he[ that] departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw[ it], and it displeased him that[ there was] no judgment.And he saw that[ there was] no man, and wondered that[ there was] no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.

O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear![ even] cry out unto thee[ of] violence, and thou wilt not save!Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and cause[ me] to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence[ are] before me: and there are[ that] raise up strife and contention.

For what[ is] the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him?Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God?I will teach you by the hand of God:[ that] which[ is] with the Almighty will I not conceal.Behold, all ye yourselves have seen[ it]; why then are ye thus altogether vain?This[ is] the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors,[ which] they shall receive of the Almighty.If his children be multiplied,[ it is] for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep.Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay;He may prepare[ it], but the just shall put[ it] on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth[ that] the keeper maketh.The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, and he[ is] not.Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest stealeth him away in the night.The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurleth him out of his place.For[ God] shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand.[ Men] shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate[ from their right].

That[ men] may know that thou, whose name alone[ is] JEHOVAH,[ art] the most high over all the earth.

Behold, the princes of Israel, every one were in thee to their power to shed blood.In thee have they set light by father and mother: in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee have they vexed the fatherless and the widow.Thou hast despised mine holy things, and hast profaned my sabbaths.In thee are men that carry tales to shed blood: and in thee they eat upon the mountains: in the midst of thee they commit lewdness.In thee have they discovered their fathers’ nakedness: in thee have they humbled her that was set apart for pollution.And one hath committed abomination with his neighbour’s wife; and another hath lewdly defiled his daughter in law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father’s daughter.In thee have they taken gifts to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by extortion, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord GOD.Behold, therefore I have smitten mine hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee.Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee? I the LORD have spoken[ it], and will do[ it].

Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail,Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit?That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes;[ yea], and sell the refuse of the wheat?The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvellous in mine eyes? saith the LORD of hosts.

For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name[ is] Holy; I dwell in the high and holy[ place], with him also[ that is] of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.

The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.So that a man shall say, Verily[ there is] a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in[ his] wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger[ from his right], and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.

Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times[ the things] that are not[ yet] done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken[ it], I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed[ it], I will also do it.

O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable[ are] his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.And they covet fields, and take[ them] by violence; and houses, and take[ them] away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, against this family do I devise an evil, from which ye shall not remove your necks; neither shall ye go haughtily: for this time[ is] evil.

For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.

For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts[ is] the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

Wherefore it shall come to pass,[ that] when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.

And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders[ of Israel, who were] clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

And I said, Hear, I pray you, O heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel;[ Is it] not for you to know judgment?Who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones;Who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings.

For the LORD[ is] a great God, and a great King above all gods.

Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.Ye have condemned[ and] killed the just;[ and] he doth not resist you.Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

But thine eyes and thine heart[ are] not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do[ it].Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him,[ saying], Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they shall not lament for him,[ saying], Ah lord! or, Ah his glory!He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

The women of my people have ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their children have ye taken away my glory for ever.

Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.Yea, they made their hearts[ as] an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.Therefore it is come to pass,[ that] as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts:

Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow[ him].I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted,[ and] the right of the poor.

Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity.They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity.The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say,[ Is] not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us.Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed[ as] a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest.

Because he hath oppressed[ and] hath forsaken the poor;[ because] he hath violently taken away an house which he builded not;Surely he shall not feel quietness in his belly, he shall not save of that which he desired.There shall none of his meat be left; therefore shall no man look for his goods.In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him.[ When] he is about to fill his belly,[ God] shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain[ it] upon him while he is eating.He shall flee from the iron weapon,[ and] the bow of steel shall strike him through.It is drawn, and cometh out of the body; yea, the glittering sword cometh out of his gall: terrors[ are] upon him.All darkness[ shall be] hid in his secret places: a fire not blown shall consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tabernacle.The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.The increase of his house shall depart,[ and his goods] shall flow away in the day of his wrath.This[ is] the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.
