若何而來、亦若何而去、斯為大患、勞而捕風、有何益哉、

良可憫也、其入世若是、其逝世亦若是、捕風無益、徒勞而已。

終身度日於黑暗中、多煩惱、多病患、多病患或作多憂傷多愁苦、

This too is a grievous evil: As everyone comes, so they depart, and what do they gain, since they toil for the wind?

Here’s something else that is very evil. Everyone is born, and everyone dies. And what do they get for their work? Nothing. It’s like working for the wind.

This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind?

And this, too, is a very serious problem. People leave this world no better off than when they came. All their hard work is for nothing— like working for the wind.

This too is a sickening tragedy: exactly as he comes, so he will go. What does the one gain who struggles for the wind?

This also is a sickening evil: exactly as a person is born, so will he die. What then is the advantage for him who labors for the wind?

And this also is a severe evil— Just exactly as he came, so shall he go. And what profit has he who has labored for the wind?

And this also is a grievous evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that he laboreth for the wind?

This too is a sickening tragedy: exactly as he comes, so he will go. What does the one gain who struggles for the wind?

The one who troubles his family will inherit nothing, and the fool will be a servant to the wise person.

What benefit do people get from all the effort which they expend on earth?

They sow the wind, and so they will reap the whirlwind! The stalk does not have any standing grain; it will not produce any flour. Even if it were to yield grain, foreigners would swallow it all up.

For what benefit is it for a person to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his life?

We were pregnant, we strained, we gave birth, as it were, to wind. We cannot produce deliverance on the earth; people to populate the world are not born.

Your priests did not ask,‘ Where is the LORD?’ Those responsible for teaching my law did not really know me. Your rulers rebelled against me. Your prophets prophesied in the name of the god Baal. They all worshiped idols that could not help them.

You should not turn aside after empty things that can’t profit and can’t deliver, since they are empty.

Here is a misfortune on earth that I have seen: Wealth hoarded by its owner to his own misery.

Do not work for the food that disappears, but for the food that remains to eternal life– the food which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has put his seal of approval on him.”

What does a man acquire from all his labor and from the anxiety that accompanies his toil on earth?For all day long his work produces pain and frustration, and even at night his mind cannot relax! This also is futile!
