Here is a misfortune on earth that I have seen: Wealth hoarded by its owner to his own misery.

I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners,

I’ve seen something very evil on earth. It’s when wealth is stored up and then brings harm to its owners.

There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt,

There is another serious problem I have seen under the sun. Hoarding riches harms the saver.

There is a sickening tragedy I have seen under the sun: wealth kept by its owner to his harm.

There is a sickening evil which I have seen under the sun: wealth being hoarded by its owner to his detriment.

There is a severe evil which I have seen under the sun: Riches kept for their owner to his hurt.

There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept by the owner thereof to his hurt:

There is a sickening tragedy I have seen under the sun: wealth kept by its owner to his harm.

There is a sore evil[ which] I have seen under the sun,[ namely], riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt.

Here is another misfortune that I have seen on earth, and it weighs heavily on people:God gives a man riches, property, and wealth so that he lacks nothing that his heart desires, yet God does not enable him to enjoy the fruit of his labor– instead, someone else enjoys it! This is fruitless and a grave misfortune.

When Jesus heard this, he said to him,“ One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”But when the man heard this he became very sad, for he was extremely wealthy.

Then Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law who were going to marry his daughters. He said,“ Quick, get out of this place because the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was ridiculing them.

“ Now the poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.And in hell, as he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far off with Lazarus at his side.

One person is generous and yet grows more wealthy, but another withholds more than he should and comes to poverty.A generous person will be enriched, and the one who provides water for others will himself be satisfied.

Jesus also said to the disciples,“ There was a rich man who was informed of accusations that his manager was wasting his assets.So he called the manager in and said to him,‘ What is this I hear about you? Turn in the account of your administration, because you can no longer be my manager.’Then the manager said to himself,‘ What should I do, since my master is taking my position away from me? I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m too ashamed to beg.I know what to do so that when I am put out of management, people will welcome me into their homes.’So he contacted his master’s debtors one by one. He asked the first,‘ How much do you owe my master?’The man replied,‘ A hundred measures of olive oil.’ The manager said to him,‘ Take your bill, sit down quickly, and write fifty.’Then he said to another,‘ And how much do you owe?’ The second man replied,‘ A hundred measures of wheat.’ The manager said to him,‘ Take your bill, and write eighty.’The master commended the dishonest manager because he acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their contemporaries than the people of light.And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by how you use worldly wealth, so that when it runs out you will be welcomed into the eternal homes.“ The one who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and the one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.If then you haven’t been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will entrust you with the true riches?And if you haven’t been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you your own?No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

Such are the ways of all who gain profit unjustly; it takes away the life of those who obtain it!

Wealth does not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from mortal danger.

Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’s angry judgment. The whole earth will be consumed by his fiery wrath. Indeed, he will bring terrifying destruction on all who live on the earth.”

Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents.But the land could not support them while they were living side by side. Because their possessions were so great, they were not able to live alongside one another.So there were quarrels between Abram’s herdsmen and Lot’s herdsmen.( Now the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land at that time.)Abram said to Lot,“ Let there be no quarreling between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are close relatives.Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself now from me. If you go to the left, then I’ll go to the right, but if you go to the right, then I’ll go to the left.”Lot looked up and saw the whole region of the Jordan. He noticed that all of it was well-watered( before the LORD obliterated Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, all the way to Zoar.Lot chose for himself the whole region of the Jordan and traveled toward the east. So the relatives separated from each other.

He then told them a parable:“ The land of a certain rich man produced an abundant crop,so he thought to himself,‘ What should I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’Then he said,‘ I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.And I will say to myself,“ You have plenty of goods stored up for many years; relax, eat, drink, celebrate!”’But God said to him,‘ You fool! This very night your life will be demanded back from you, but who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’So it is with the one who stores up riches for himself, but is not rich toward God.”

A man who is all alone with no companion, he has no children nor siblings; yet there is no end to all his toil, and he is never satisfied with riches. He laments,“ For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is futile and a burdensome task!

Later the older daughter said to the younger,“ Our father is old, and there is no man anywhere nearby to have sexual relations with us, according to the way of all the world.Come, let’s make our father drunk with wine so we can have sexual relations with him and preserve our family line through our father.”So that night they made their father drunk with wine, and the older daughter came and had sexual relations with her father. But he was not aware that she had sexual relations with him and then got up.So in the morning the older daughter said to the younger,“ Since I had sexual relations with my father last night, let’s make him drunk again tonight. Then you go and have sexual relations with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.”So they made their father drunk that night as well, and the younger one came and had sexual relations with him. But he was not aware that she had sexual relations with him and then got up.In this way both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.The older daughter gave birth to a son and named him Moab. He is the ancestor of the Moabites of today.The younger daughter also gave birth to a son and named him Ben-Ammi. He is the ancestor of the Ammonites of today.

For the waywardness of the simpletons will kill them, and the careless ease of fools will destroy them.

If they say,“ Come with us! We will lie in wait to shed blood; we will ambush an innocent person capriciously.We will swallow them alive like Sheol, those full of vigor like those going down to the Pit.We will seize all kinds of precious wealth; we will fill our houses with plunder.

He retrieved all the stolen property. He also brought back his nephew Lot and his possessions, as well as the women and the rest of the people.

But Lot’s wife looked back longingly and was turned into a pillar of salt.

For a fool speaks disgraceful things; his mind plans out sinful deeds. He commits godless deeds and says misleading things about the LORD; he gives the hungry nothing to satisfy their appetite and gives the thirsty nothing to drink.A deceiver’s methods are evil; he dreams up evil plans to ruin the poor with lies, even when the needy are in the right.An honorable man makes honorable plans; his honorable character gives him security.

“ There was a rich man who dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.

While applying my mind to everything that happens in this world, I have seen all this: Sometimes one person dominates other people to their harm.

Come now, you rich! Weep and cry aloud over the miseries that are coming on you.Your riches have rotted and your clothing has become moth- eaten.Your gold and silver have rusted and their rust will be a witness against you. It will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have hoarded treasure!Look, the pay you have held back from the workers who mowed your fields cries out against you, and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.

Those who long to be rich, however, stumble into temptation and a trap and many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.For the love of money is the root of all evils. Some people in reaching for it have strayed from the faith and stabbed themselves with many pains.

At that time men will throw their silver and gold idols, which they made for themselves to worship, into the caves where rodents and bats live,

But Zacchaeus stopped and said to the Lord,“ Look, Lord, half of my possessions I now give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone of anything, I am paying back four times as much!”

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters! Did not God choose the poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?But you have dishonored the poor! Are not the rich oppressing you and dragging you into the courts?Do they not blaspheme the good name of the one you belong to?
