I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners,

I’ve seen something very evil on earth. It’s when wealth is stored up and then brings harm to its owners.

There is another serious problem I have seen under the sun. Hoarding riches harms the saver.

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is widespread among mankind:a person to whom God has given riches, wealth, and honor, so that his soul lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God has not given him the opportunity to enjoy these things, but a foreigner enjoys them. This is futility and a severe affliction.

Now when Jesus heard this, He said to him,“ One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely wealthy.

So Lot went out and spoke to his sons in law, who were to marry his daughters, and said,“ Up, get out of this place, for the Lord is destroying the city.” But he appeared to his sons in law to be joking.

Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s arms; and the rich man also died and was buried.And in Hades he raised his eyes, being in torment, and* saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his arms.

There is one who scatters, and yet increases all the more, And there is one who withholds what is justly due, and yet it results only in poverty.A generous person will be prosperous, And one who gives others plenty of water will himself be given plenty.

Now He was also saying to the disciples,“ There was a rich man who had a manager, and this manager was reported to him as squandering his possessions.And he summoned him and said to him,‘ What is this I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’And the manager said to himself,‘ What am I to do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig; I am ashamed to beg.I know what I will do, so that when I am removed from the management people will welcome me into their homes.’And he summoned each one of his master’s debtors, and he began saying to the first,‘ How much do you owe my master?’And he said,‘ A hundred jugs of oil.’ And he said to him,‘ Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’Then he said to another,‘ And how much do you owe?’ And he said,‘ A hundred kors of wheat.’ He* said to him,‘ Take your bill, and write eighty.’And his master complimented the unrighteous manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the sons of this age are more shrewd in relation to their own kind than the sons of light.And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of the wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it is all gone, they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.“ The one who is faithful in a very little thing is also faithful in much; and the one who is unrighteous in a very little thing is also unrighteous in much.Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of unrighteous wealth, who will entrust the true wealth to you?And if you have not been faithful in the use of that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own?No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”

Such are the ways of everyone who makes unjust gain; It takes away the life of its possessors.

Riches do not benefit on the day of wrath, But righteousness rescues from death.

Neither their silver nor their gold Will be able to save them On the day of the Lord’s anger; And all the earth will be devoured By the fire of His jealousy, For He will make a complete end, Indeed a horrifying one, Of all the inhabitants of the earth.

Now Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents.And the land could not support both of them while living together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to remain together.And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. Now the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land at that time.So Abram said to Lot,“ Please let there be no strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are relatives!Is the entire land not before you? Please separate from me; if you choose the left, then I will go to the right; or if you choose the right, then I will go to the left.”Lot raised his eyes and saw all the vicinity of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere— this was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah— like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt going toward Zoar.So Lot chose for himself all the vicinity of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. So they separated from each other.

And He told them a parable, saying,“ The land of a rich man was very productive.And he began thinking to himself, saying,‘ What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’And he said,‘ This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and I will store all my grain and my goods there.And I will say to myself,“ You have many goods stored up for many years to come; relax, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself!” ’But God said to him,‘ You fool! This very night your soul is demanded of you; and as for all that you have prepared, who will own it now?’Such is the one who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich in relation to God.”

There was a man without a dependent, having neither a son nor a brother, yet there was no end to all his labor. Indeed, his eyes were not satisfied with riches, and he never asked,“ And for whom do I labor and deprive myself of pleasure?” This too is futility, and it is an unhappy task.

Then the firstborn said to the younger,“ Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to have relations with us according to the custom of all the earth.Come, let’s make our father drink wine, and let’s sleep with him so that we may keep our family alive through our father.”So they made their father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went in and slept with her father; and he did not know when she lay down or got up.On the following day, the firstborn said to the younger,“ Look, I slept last night with my father; let’s make him drink wine tonight too, then you go in and sleep with him, so that we may keep our family alive through our father.”So they had their father drink wine that night too, and the younger got up and slept with him; and he did not know when she lay down or got up.And so both of the daughters of Lot conceived by their father.The firstborn gave birth to a son, and named him Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.As for the younger, she also gave birth to a son, and named him Ben ammi; he is the father of the sons of Ammon to this day.

For the faithlessness of the naive will kill them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them.

If they say,“ Come with us, Let’s lie in wait for blood, Let’s ambush the innocent without cause;Let’s swallow them alive like Sheol, Even whole, like those who go down to the pit;We will find all kinds of precious wealth, We will fill our houses with plunder;

He brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his relative Lot with his possessions, and also the women, and the other people.

But Lot’s wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

For a fool speaks nonsense, And his heart inclines toward wickedness: To practice ungodliness and to speak error against the Lord, To keep the hungry person unsatisfied And to withhold drink from the thirsty.As for a rogue, his weapons are evil; He devises wicked schemes To destroy the poor with slander, Even though the needy one speaks what is right.But the noble person devises noble plans; And by noble plans he stands.

“ Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, enjoying himself in splendor every day.

All this I have seen, and have applied my mind to every deed that has been done under the sun at a time when one person has exercised authority over another person to his detriment.

Come now, you rich people, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you.Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth eaten.Your gold and your silver have corroded, and their corrosion will serve as a testimony against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure!Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of armies.

But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge people into ruin and destruction.For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

On that day people will throw away to the moles and the bats Their idols of silver and their idols of gold, Which they made for themselves to worship,

But Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord,“ Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I am giving to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone, I am giving back four times as much.”

Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters: did God not choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court?Do they not blaspheme the good name by which you have been called?
