Here is a tragedy I have observed under the sun, and it weighs heavily on humanity:God gives a person riches, wealth, and honor so that he lacks nothing of all he desires for himself, but God does not allow him to enjoy them. Instead, a stranger will enjoy them. This is futile and a sickening tragedy.

When Jesus heard this, he told him,“ You still lack one thing: Sell all you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”After he heard this, he became extremely sad, because he was very rich.

So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were going to marry his daughters.“ Get up,” he said.“ Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.

One day the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.And being in torment in Hades, he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off, with Lazarus at his side.

One person gives freely, yet gains more; another withholds what is right, only to become poor.A generous person will be enriched, and the one who gives a drink of water will receive water.

Now he said to the disciples,“ There was a rich man who received an accusation that his manager was squandering his possessions.So he called the manager in and asked,‘ What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you can no longer be my manager.’“ Then the manager said to himself,‘ What will I do since my master is taking the management away from me? I’m not strong enough to dig; I’m ashamed to beg.I know what I’ll do so that when I’m removed from management, people will welcome me into their homes.’“ So he summoned each one of his master’s debtors.‘ How much do you owe my master?’ he asked the first one.“‘ A hundred measures of olive oil,’ he said.“‘ Take your invoice,’ he told him,‘ sit down quickly, and write fifty.’“ Next he asked another,‘ How much do you owe?’“‘ A hundred measures of wheat,’ he said.“‘ Take your invoice,’ he told him,‘ and write eighty.’“ The master praised the unrighteous manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the children of this age are more shrewd than the children of light in dealing with their own people.And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of worldly wealth so that when it fails, they may welcome you into eternal dwellings.Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much, and whoever is unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much.So if you have not been faithful with worldly wealth, who will trust you with what is genuine?And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to someone else, who will give you what is your own?No servant can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

Such are the paths of all who make profit dishonestly; it takes the lives of those who receive it.

Wealth is not profitable on a day of wrath, but righteousness rescues from death.

Their silver and their gold will be unable to rescue them on the day of the LORD’s wrath. The whole earth will be consumed by the fire of his jealousy, for he will make a complete, yes, a horrifying end of all the inhabitants of the earth.

Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents.But the land was unable to support them as long as they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they could not stay together,and there was quarreling between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock.( At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land.)So Abram said to Lot,“ Please, let’s not have quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, since we are relatives.Isn’t the whole land before you? Separate from me: if you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”Lot looked out and saw that the entire plain of the Jordan as far as Zoar was well watered everywhere like the LORD’s garden and the land of Egypt.( This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)So Lot chose the entire plain of the Jordan for himself. Then Lot journeyed eastward, and they separated from each other.

Then he told them a parable:“ A rich man’s land was very productive.He thought to himself,‘ What should I do, since I don’t have anywhere to store my crops?I will do this,’ he said.‘ I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones and store all my grain and my goods there.Then I’ll say to myself,“ You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.”’“ But God said to him,‘ You fool! This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared— whose will they be?’“ That’s how it is with the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

There is a person without a companion, without even a son or brother, and though there is no end to all his struggles, his eyes are still not content with riches.“ Who am I struggling for,” he asks,“ and depriving myself of good things?” This too is futile and a miserable task.

Then the firstborn said to the younger,“ Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to sleep with us as is the custom of all the land.Come, let’s get our father to drink wine so that we can sleep with him and preserve our father’s line.”So they got their father to drink wine that night, and the firstborn came and slept with her father; he did not know when she lay down or when she got up.The next day the firstborn said to the younger,“ Look, I slept with my father last night. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight so you can go sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.”That night they again got their father to drink wine, and the younger went and slept with him; he did not know when she lay down or when she got up.So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.The firstborn gave birth to a son and named him Moab. He is the father of the Moabites of today.The younger also gave birth to a son, and she named him Ben-ammi. He is the father of the Ammonites of today.

For the apostasy of the inexperienced will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them.

If they say—“ Come with us! Let’s set an ambush and kill someone. Let’s attack some innocent person just for fun!Let’s swallow them alive, like Sheol, whole, like those who go down to the Pit.We’ll find all kinds of valuable property and fill our houses with plunder.

He brought back all the goods and also his relative Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the other people.

But Lot’s wife looked back and became a pillar of salt.

For a fool speaks foolishness and his mind plots iniquity. He lives in a godless way and speaks falsely about the LORD. He leaves the hungry empty and deprives the thirsty of drink.The scoundrel’s weapons are destructive; he hatches plots to destroy the needy with lies, even when the poor person says what is right.But a noble person plans noble things; he stands up for noble causes.

“ There was a rich man who would dress in purple and fine linen, feasting lavishly every day.

All this I have seen, applying my mind to all the work that is done under the sun, at a time when one person has authority over another to his harm.

Come now, you rich people, weep and wail over the miseries that are coming on you.Your wealth has rotted and your clothes are moth-eaten.Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have stored up treasure in the last days.Look! The pay that you withheld from the workers who mowed your fields cries out, and the outcry of the harvesters has reached the ears of the Lord of Armies.

But those who want to be rich fall into temptation, a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge people into ruin and destruction.For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

On that day people will throw their worthless idols of silver and gold, which they made to worship, to the moles and the bats.

But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord,“ Look, I’ll give half of my possessions to the poor, Lord. And if I have extorted anything from anyone, I’ll pay back four times as much.”

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Didn’t God choose the poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him?Yet you have dishonored the poor. Don’t the rich oppress you and drag you into court?Don’t they blaspheme the good name that was invoked over you?
