There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.“ For whom am I toiling,” he asked,“ and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?” This too is meaningless— a miserable business!

A man lived all by himself. He didn’t have any sons or brothers. His hard work never ended. But he wasn’t happy with what he had.“ Who am I working so hard for?” he asked.“ Why don’t I get the things I enjoy?” That doesn’t have any meaning either. In fact, it’s a very bad deal!

one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks,“ For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy business.

蓋世人心為欲所役、目為物所引、驕泰邪侈、非父使之然、由世所誘、

萬物運動、言之不能盡、睹之不勝睹、聞之不勝聞。

專心致志、窮察天下事、知上帝以斯任畀人、使竭其心思。

上帝曰、無知者乎、今夜將索爾魂、則所備者誰歸、

二人為侶、勝於一人獨居、可相助以有成。若一人傾跌、則一人為之扶持、獨居而蹶、援手無人、豈不難哉。同寢多暖、獨寐少溫。一人不勝敵、二人相助、則克之、繩有三重、則不易斷。

強據宅第、多得土田、不遺隙地、推其意、幾欲獨攬遍境、深可疾也、

各人所為、無非捉影、諠譟徒勞兮、積累財貨、不知孰得兮。

以金為寶者、金不足以滿其心、惟貨是好者、貨不足以充其欲、此亦屬於虛而已。

耶和華上帝曰、不可使夫人獨處、必造一相助為理者。

爾以金市者、不足以果腹、勞而得者、不足以饜心、是誠何故與。爾謹聽我言、可飫嘉肴、可食肥甘、而心悅懌。

亞伯蘭曰、吾主耶和華將何以賜我、蓋我無子、惟大馬色人以利亞薩為我家宰。又曰、爾未賜我子、則素育於我家者、將為我嗣。

終日勞苦、終夜不安、亦屬於虛。

凡勞苦負重者就我、我賜爾安、

孰能深思其故、奮然儆醒曰、材木之半、焚之可以烘餅炙肉、而供口腹、則其餘材、豈可作像、拜此可憎之榾柮。彼心昏迷、所望成空、若食燼餘而不悟、不知右手所作、悉屬虛妄。

異邦之人歸誠於我者、勿曰、耶和華不以我為赤子、閹者亦勿曰、我若枯木、凡受閹之人、守予安息日、從予所悅懌、不爽盟約、我之宅第、必賜彼居處、其名不朽、較子女眾多者為多福。

維彼敵人、沉湎於酒者、廉恥道喪、居心粗浮者、遨遊遠方、貪欲無藝、若陰司暗府、無日充盈焉、彼使邦國、咸歸統轄、斯眾必作歌以譏刺、曰、他人之財、充積爾家、質當之物、盡歸爾身、久而不償、禍必不遠、困爾者勃興、撼爾者亟起、攘奪爾之所有、因爾刧掠邦國、不可勝數、殺人強據、害諸邑民、故其餘民、亦將取爾之所藏、爾貪不義之利、以富其家、營巢甚高、求免災害、禍必不遠、
