There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.“ For whom am I toiling,” he asked,“ and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?” This too is meaningless— a miserable business!

A man lived all by himself. He didn’t have any sons or brothers. His hard work never ended. But he wasn’t happy with what he had.“ Who am I working so hard for?” he asked.“ Why don’t I get the things I enjoy?” That doesn’t have any meaning either. In fact, it’s a very bad deal!

one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks,“ For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy business.

This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself,“ Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?” It is all so meaningless and depressing.

陰間和滅亡處永不滿足；人的眼目也永不滿足。

因為世界上的事物、肉體的私慾、眼目的私慾、和人生的矜誇、都不是出於父，而是出於世界。

萬物都疲勞困乏；人也不能說得盡；眼看，看不飽，耳聽、聽不足。

我專心一志用智慧去尋求窺探天下所發生過的一切事，就知道上帝給世人所勞碌的是多麼喫力的勞苦。

但上帝卻對他說：「糊塗人哪，就在今天夜裏，你的財物就要要你的命了！你所豫備的、要歸誰呢？」

兩個人總比一個人好，因為二人勞碌，同得美好的果效。因為他們若跌倒了，這一人可以把他的同伴扶起來；若是這一人跌倒，沒有別人把他扶起來，這人就有禍了。再者，若有二人同睡，他們就都暖和；一人獨睡，怎能暖和呢？雖有人能攻勝孤身一人，若有二人，便能敵擋他。三股合成的繩子不容易折斷。

有禍啊！那些使房屋連接房屋，使田地毗連田地，以致不留餘地，而你們只好獨居境內！

人走來走去、簡直是影兒；悲哀歎息不過是虛幻；他積聚着財寶，不知誰來收取。

貪愛銀子的、不因得銀子而知足；貪愛財富的、不因得收入而知足；這也是虛空。

永恆主上帝說：『那人獨居不好；我要為他造個幫助者做他的配偶。』

你們為甚麼花錢去買那不是食物的？為甚麼用你們勞碌得來的去買那不能使人飽足的呢？你們要注意聽我，就得以喫美物，心中以肥甘為樂趣。

亞伯蘭說：『主啊，我，我快要去世了還沒有兒子，你還賜給我甚麼呢？那麼承受我家業的、就將要是大馬色以利以謝了！』亞伯蘭說：『你看，你沒有給我後裔；看吧，我家中的男兒就要做我的後嗣了。』

因為他一生的日子都是痛苦，他的勞苦便是愁苦；連夜間他的心也不能偃息：這也是虛空。

一切勞苦背重擔的人哪，來找我吧，我便給你們安歇。

沒有一個人心裏回悟過來，也沒有一個有知識有聰明能夠說：「木頭的一半我已經燒在火中，我也曾在其炭火上烤過餅，烤過肉喫；難道其剩下的我還要作一座可厭惡之像！我還要向樹木頭叩拜！」嘿，以爐灰為食的人！被愚弄的心使他偏行了；他不能援救自己，也不能說：『莫非我右手中有虛假？』

皈依永恆主的外族人不要說：『永恆主必定將我從他人民中分別出來』；被閹割的人也不要說：『唉，我是棵枯乾了的樹了。』因為永恆主這麼說：『那些謹守我的安息日、選擇我所喜悅的事，持守我的約的閹割人，我必使他們在我殿中、在我牆內、有記念碑、有名號，比有兒女更美好：我必賜給他們永遠的名，不能被剪除的。

還有呢、那詭詐的有禍啊！那倨傲的人、他必不得安居：他擴大其所慾像陰間，他好像死亡永不滿足；聚集列國人都歸自己，收拾萬族之民到他那裏。』這些國的人豈不都要唱起象徵歌和諷刺謎語來嘲弄他說：『那增加不屬自己之利息物的、有禍啊！——要到幾時為止呢？——那多多取人的當頭以肥己的、有禍啊！』那被你索取利息的、豈不忽然起來？那要大大攪動你的、豈不醒起？那你就做他們的擄物了！因你搶奪了許多國的財物，列族之民剩下的人、也都必搶奪你；因為你殺了人而流其血，又向國內、向都市和其中一切居民行了強暴、的緣故。為自己的家積蓄着不義的臭錢，去在高處搭窩，指望着安穩、免受災禍之掌握的、有禍啊！
