有人塊然獨處、無兄弟子女、不與友朋交接、然亦勞苦不已、雖得貨財、不以為足、不敢自用、不知遺誰、此屬於虛、更貽後患。

有人獨處無子、無兄弟、然亦勞碌不已、雖得多財、目中不以為足、亦不自問曰、我不自享所得、我勞碌究為誰耶、此亦屬於虛、徒勞無益、

There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.“ For whom am I toiling,” he asked,“ and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?” This too is meaningless— a miserable business!

A man lived all by himself. He didn’t have any sons or brothers. His hard work never ended. But he wasn’t happy with what he had.“ Who am I working so hard for?” he asked.“ Why don’t I get the things I enjoy?” That doesn’t have any meaning either. In fact, it’s a very bad deal!

one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks,“ For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy business.

This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself,“ Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?” It is all so meaningless and depressing.

There is a person without a companion, without even a son or brother, and though there is no end to all his struggles, his eyes are still not content with riches.“ Who am I struggling for,” he asks,“ and depriving myself of good things?” This too is futile and a miserable task.

陰間和滅亡不會滿足，人的眼目也是一樣。

原來世上的一切，就如肉體的私慾，眼目的私慾和今生的驕傲，都不是出於父，而是從世界來的。

萬事都令人厭倦，人說，說不盡；眼看，看不飽；耳聽，聽不足。

我曾用智慧專心尋求查究天下所發生的一切事；原來神給予世人的，是勞苦的擔子，叫他們為此煩惱。

神卻對他說：‘無知的人哪，今天晚上，你的靈魂必被取去，你所預備的要歸給誰呢？’

二人勝過一人，因為他們一起的勞碌有美好的酬報。如果一個跌倒，另一個可以把他的同伴扶起來。但一人孤身跌倒，沒有別人把他扶起來，他就悲慘了。還有，二人同睡，就都暖和；一人獨睡，怎能暖和呢？有人能制伏孤身一人，如果有二人就擋得住他。三股合成的繩子，不容易扯斷。

那些使房屋連接房屋，使田地連接田地，以致不留餘地的人，有禍了！你們只可以獨居在境內。

世人來來往往只是幻影，他們忙亂也是虛空；積聚財物，卻不知道誰要來收取。

貪愛銀子的，不因有銀子滿足；貪愛財富的，也不因得利知足。這也是虛空。

耶和華神說：“那人獨居不好，我要為他造個和他相配的幫手。”

你們為甚麼用銀子去買那不是食物的呢？為甚麼用你們勞碌得來的去買那不能使人飽足的呢？你們要留心聽我的話，就可以吃美物，使你們的心靈享受肥甘。

亞伯蘭說：“主耶和華啊，我一向都沒有孩子，你還能賜給我甚麼呢？這樣，承受我家業的，就是大馬士革人以利以謝了。”亞伯蘭又說：“你既然沒有給我後裔，那生在我家中的人，就是我的繼承人了。”

其實終其一生，他的擔子既痛苦又煩惱，在夜間也不能安心。這也是虛空。

你們所有勞苦擔重擔的人哪，到我這裡來吧！我必使你們得安息。

沒有人細心思想，也沒有人有知識有聰明說：“我把木頭的一半放在火裡燃燒，我也在炭火上烘過餅，烤過肉吃，剩下的，我卻用來做了一個可憎之物，我要向木頭叩拜嗎？”他所追求的只是灰塵，被迷惑了的心使他偏離正道了；他不能救自己，也不會說：“在我的右手中不是有個假神嗎？”

與耶和華聯合的外族人不要說：“耶和華必把我從他的子民中分別出來。”被閹割了的人也不要說：“看哪！我是一棵枯樹。”因為耶和華這樣說：“那些謹守我的安息日，揀選我所喜悅的事，持守我的約、被閹割了的人，在我的殿中和在我的牆內，我要賜給他們有記念，有名號，比有兒女更好；我必賜給他們永遠不能廢掉的名。

財富（傳統作“酒”，今照死海古卷譯作“財富”）使人奸詐狂傲，不得安寧；擴張慾望，如同陰間；又像死亡，永不滿足。他們招聚萬國，集合萬民，都歸自己。這些國民豈不都用譬喻、諷刺、暗語指著他們說：“那些濫得他人財物的，滿載別人抵押品的，有禍了！他們這樣要到幾時呢？”你的債主（“你的債主”或譯：“咬你的”）豈不忽然起來？擾亂你的豈不醒起？你就成了他們的擄物。因你搶掠多國，殺人流血，向全地各城和其中所有居民施行暴力，所以剩下的人也必搶掠你。你這為自己的家積聚不義之財，在高處搭窩，以逃避災害的，有禍了！
