There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.“ For whom am I toiling,” he asked,“ and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?” This too is meaningless— a miserable business!

A man lived all by himself. He didn’t have any sons or brothers. His hard work never ended. But he wasn’t happy with what he had.“ Who am I working so hard for?” he asked.“ Why don’t I get the things I enjoy?” That doesn’t have any meaning either. In fact, it’s a very bad deal!

one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks,“ For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy business.

This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself,“ Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?” It is all so meaningless and depressing.

阴间和灭亡不会满足，人的眼目也是一样。

原来世上的一切，就如肉体的私欲，眼目的私欲和今生的骄傲，都不是出于父，而是从世界来的。

万事都令人厌倦，人说，说不尽；眼看，看不饱；耳听，听不足。

我曾用智慧专心寻求查究天下所发生的一切事；原来神给予世人的，是劳苦的担子，叫他们为此烦恼。

神却对他说：‘无知的人哪，今天晚上，你的灵魂必被取去，你所预备的要归给谁呢？’

二人胜过一人，因为他们一起的劳碌有美好的酬报。如果一个跌倒，另一个可以把他的同伴扶起来。但一人孤身跌倒，没有别人把他扶起来，他就悲惨了。还有，二人同睡，就都暖和；一人独睡，怎能暖和呢？有人能制伏孤身一人，如果有二人就挡得住他。三股合成的绳子，不容易扯断。

那些使房屋连接房屋，使田地连接田地，以致不留余地的人，有祸了！你们只可以独居在境内。

世人来来往往只是幻影，他们忙乱也是虚空；积聚财物，却不知道谁要来收取。

贪爱银子的，不因有银子满足；贪爱财富的，也不因得利知足。这也是虚空。

耶和华神说：“那人独居不好，我要为他造个和他相配的帮手。”

你们为什么用银子去买那不是食物的呢？为什么用你们劳碌得来的去买那不能使人饱足的呢？你们要留心听我的话，就可以吃美物，使你们的心灵享受肥甘。

亚伯兰说：“主耶和华啊，我一向都没有孩子，你还能赐给我什么呢？这样，承受我家业的，就是大马士革人以利以谢了。”亚伯兰又说：“你既然没有给我后裔，那生在我家中的人，就是我的继承人了。”

其实终其一生，他的担子既痛苦又烦恼，在夜间也不能安心。这也是虚空。

你们所有劳苦担重担的人哪，到我这里来吧！我必使你们得安息。

没有人细心思想，也没有人有知识有聪明说：“我把木头的一半放在火里燃烧，我也在炭火上烘过饼，烤过肉吃，剩下的，我却用来做了一个可憎之物，我要向木头叩拜吗？”他所追求的只是灰尘，被迷惑了的心使他偏离正道了；他不能救自己，也不会说：“在我的右手中不是有个假神吗？”

与耶和华联合的外族人不要说：“耶和华必把我从他的子民中分别出来。”被阉割了的人也不要说：“看哪！我是一棵枯树。”因为耶和华这样说：“那些谨守我的安息日，拣选我所喜悦的事，持守我的约、被阉割了的人，在我的殿中和在我的墙内，我要赐给他们有记念，有名号，比有儿女更好；我必赐给他们永远不能废掉的名。

财富（传统作“酒”，今照死海古卷译作“财富”）使人奸诈狂傲，不得安宁；扩张欲望，如同阴间；又像死亡，永不满足。他们招聚万国，集合万民，都归自己。这些国民岂不都用譬喻、讽刺、暗语指着他们说：“那些滥得他人财物的，满载别人抵押品的，有祸了！他们这样要到几时呢？”你的债主（“你的债主”或译：“咬你的”）岂不忽然起来？扰乱你的岂不醒起？你就成了他们的掳物。因你抢掠多国，杀人流血，向全地各城和其中所有居民施行暴力，所以剩下的人也必抢掠你。你这为自己的家积聚不义之财，在高处搭窝，以逃避灾害的，有祸了！
