我並且以為、那未曾生的、就是那未曾經驗過日光之下所發生的壞事的、比這兩種人還好。

并且我以为那未曾生的，就是未见过日光之下恶事的，比这两等人更强。

但那尚未出生，就是未曾见过日光之下所发生之恶事的，比这两种人更幸福。

但那尚未出生，就是未曾见过日光之下所发生之恶事的，比这两种人更幸福。

不过，比以上两种人更幸运的是那从未出生的人，他们从未见过日光之下各样的恶行。

那还没生下来的，就是还没看过日光之下所行的恶事的，比这两种人更有福。

並且我以為那未曾生的，就是未見過日光之下惡事的，比這兩等人更強。

且以未生之人、未睹日下所作之惡者、較斯二者為尤愈也、○

又思未生於斯世者、未見斯人之穢行、較生而復死者、尤為幸甚。

較此二者、未生於世、未見日下所作之惡事者更為幸、○

因為日子必到，你就看吧，那時人必說：「那不能生育的、那沒有生產過的胎、沒有乳養過的胸、有福啊！」

人若生了一百個孩子，活了許多歲數，以致他的年日很多，但他心裏卻不得飽享福樂，他又不得適當的葬禮；我說流產胎比他還好。因為流產胎虛虛幻幻而來，暗暗而去，其名字也給黑暗遮蔽着；並且它沒有見過天日，也毫無知覺；這胎實在比那人還安然。

當那些日子，懷孕的和餵奶子的有禍啊！

因為它沒有把懷我的胎門閉着，沒有對我的眼隱藏着苦難。我為甚麼不從母胎就死去？為甚麼不出母腹就氣絕呢？為甚麼有雙膝來接收我？為甚麼有胸給我喫奶呢？不然、我就早已躺臥而靜寂，早已長眠而安息，跟地上的君王和謀士、跟為自己造荒陵的同安息，或跟有黃金的王子，跟將銀子裝滿房屋的同安息了。我為甚麼又不像流產而埋藏的胎、以歸於無？不像未見光的死產嬰呢？

給尋見墳墓就歡喜、而快樂高興的人呢？

『你為甚麼使我出母胎呢？把不得我當時就氣絕，不讓人眼看見我啊！這樣、就似乎未曾有我一樣；一出母腹、就被送入墳墓。

我見過日光之下所發生過的一切事；啊，都是虛空！都是捕風！

我說：『巴不得我有翅膀像鴿子！我就飛走，去安然居住；啊，我竟須遠游，去住宿於曠野呢。（細拉）我要趕到我的逃避所，以脫離狂風暴雨。』主啊，吞滅他們，使他們的口舌分歧吧；因為我見了強暴和爭競的事於城中。這類之事在城牆上晝夜繞行；在城內則有奸惡和毒害：有毁滅於其中，欺凌和詭詐不離開其街市。

但願我在曠野有行路人住宿的地方，使我可以放下我的人民而離開他們；因為他們都是行姦淫的、是行詭詐的一幫。他們彎了舌頭像弓一樣；在這地得勢的是虛假、不是忠信；因為他們是出於壞而歸於壞的，連我、他們也不認識：永恆主發神諭說。

故此我恨惡生命，因為在日光之下所發生過的事都使我憂苦；因為都是虛空，都是捕風。

因為永恆主不使我死於母胎，好讓我母親做我的墳墓，而母胎永遠懷着。我為甚麼出母胎而見勞碌辛苦，以致我的年日都消耗於失望中呢？
