There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

At first, all the people served him when he became king. But those who came later weren’t pleased with the way he was ruling. That doesn’t have any meaning either. It’s like chasing the wind.

There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Endless crowds stand around him, but then another generation grows up and rejects him, too. So it is all meaningless— like chasing the wind.

以色列众支派的百姓都议论纷纷，说：“王曾救我们脱离仇敌的手，又救我们脱离非利士人的手，现在他为了押沙龙逃离这地了。

在那里，以色列百姓败在大卫的臣仆面前。那日在那里阵亡的很多，共有二万人。战争蔓延到整个地面，那日被树林吞噬的军兵比被刀剑吞噬的更多。

押沙龙献祭的时候，派人去把大卫的谋士，基罗人亚希多弗从他本城基罗请来。于是叛乱越发强大，因为随从押沙龙的百姓日渐增多。报信的人来到大卫那里，说：“以色列人的心都归向押沙龙了！”

那时，哈及的儿子亚多尼雅妄自尊大，说：“我要作王”，就为自己预备座车、骑兵，又派五十人在他前头奔跑。他父亲从来没有责怪他，说：“你为何这么做？”他非常俊美，生在押沙龙之后。亚多尼雅与洗鲁雅的儿子约押和亚比亚他祭司商议；他们就顺从亚多尼雅，帮助他。

上帝喜爱谁，就给谁智慧、知识和喜乐；惟有罪人，上帝使他劳苦，将他所储藏、所堆积的归给上帝所喜爱的人。这也是虚空，也是捕风。

你们如今若以诚实正直对待耶路巴力和他的家，就可以因亚比米勒欢乐，他也可以因你们欢乐；不然，愿火从亚比米勒发出，吞灭示剑居民和伯‧米罗，又愿火从示剑居民和伯‧米罗发出，吞灭亚比米勒。”

那些与他一同长大的年轻人对他说：“这百姓对王说：‘你父亲使我们负重轭，求你给我们减轻一些。’王要对他们如此说：‘我的小指头比我父亲的腰还粗呢！我父亲使你们负重轭，现在我必使你们负更重的轭！我父亲用鞭子惩罚你们，我要用蝎子惩罚你们！’”耶罗波安和众百姓遵照王所说“你们第三天再来见我”的话，第三天来到罗波安那里。王严厉地回答百姓，不采纳长者给他出的主意。他照着年轻人所出的主意对他们说：“我父亲使你们负重轭，我必使你们负更重的轭！我父亲用鞭子惩罚你们，我却要用蝎子惩罚你们！”王不依从百姓，因这事件是出于耶和华，为要应验耶和华藉示罗人亚希雅对尼八的儿子耶罗波安所说的话。以色列众人见王不依从他们，百姓就回话给王，说：“我们在大卫中有什么份呢？我们在耶西的儿子中没有产业！以色列啊，回你的帐棚去吧！大卫啊，现在你顾自己的家吧！”于是，以色列人都回自己的帐棚去了；

众百姓跟随他上来，吹着笛，大大欢呼，地被他们的声音震裂。
