There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

At first, all the people served him when he became king. But those who came later weren’t pleased with the way he was ruling. That doesn’t have any meaning either. It’s like chasing the wind.

There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Endless crowds stand around him, but then another generation grows up and rejects him, too. So it is all meaningless— like chasing the wind.

以色列眾支派的百姓都議論紛紛，說：「王曾救我們脫離仇敵的手，又救我們脫離非利士人的手，現在他為了押沙龍逃離這地了。

在那裏，以色列百姓敗在大衛的臣僕面前。那日在那裏陣亡的很多，共有二萬人。戰爭蔓延到整個地面，那日被樹林吞噬的軍兵比被刀劍吞噬的更多。

押沙龍獻祭的時候，派人去把大衛的謀士，基羅人亞希多弗從他本城基羅請來。於是叛亂越發強大，因為隨從押沙龍的百姓日漸增多。報信的人來到大衛那裏，說：「以色列人的心都歸向押沙龍了！」

那時，哈及的兒子亞多尼雅妄自尊大，說：「我要作王」，就為自己預備座車、騎兵，又派五十人在他前頭奔跑。他父親從來沒有責怪他，說：「你為何這麼做？」他非常俊美，生在押沙龍之後。亞多尼雅與洗魯雅的兒子約押和亞比亞他祭司商議；他們就順從亞多尼雅，幫助他。

神喜愛誰，就給誰智慧、知識和喜樂；惟有罪人，神使他勞苦，將他所儲藏、所堆積的歸給神所喜愛的人。這也是虛空，也是捕風。

你們如今若以誠實正直對待耶路巴力和他的家，就可以因亞比米勒歡樂，他也可以因你們歡樂；不然，願火從亞比米勒發出，吞滅示劍居民和伯‧米羅，又願火從示劍居民和伯‧米羅發出，吞滅亞比米勒。」

那些與他一同長大的年輕人對他說：「這百姓對王說：『你父親使我們負重軛，求你給我們減輕一些。』王要對他們如此說：『我的小指頭比我父親的腰還粗呢！我父親使你們負重軛，現在我必使你們負更重的軛！我父親用鞭子懲罰你們，我要用蠍子懲罰你們！』」耶羅波安和眾百姓遵照王所說「你們第三天再來見我」的話，第三天來到羅波安那裏。王嚴厲地回答百姓，不採納長者給他出的主意。他照着年輕人所出的主意對他們說：「我父親使你們負重軛，我必使你們負更重的軛！我父親用鞭子懲罰你們，我卻要用蠍子懲罰你們！」王不依從百姓，因這事件是出於耶和華，為要應驗耶和華藉示羅人亞希雅對尼八的兒子耶羅波安所說的話。以色列眾人見王不依從他們，百姓就回話給王，說：「我們在大衛中有甚麼份呢？我們在耶西的兒子中沒有產業！以色列啊，回你的帳棚去吧！大衛啊，現在你顧自己的家吧！」於是，以色列人都回自己的帳棚去了；

眾百姓跟隨他上來，吹着笛，大大歡呼，地被他們的聲音震裂。
