There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

At first, all the people served him when he became king. But those who came later weren’t pleased with the way he was ruling. That doesn’t have any meaning either. It’s like chasing the wind.

There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Endless crowds stand around him, but then another generation grows up and rejects him, too. So it is all meaningless— like chasing the wind.

以色列众支派的人纷纷议论说：“王曾救我们脱离仇敌的手，又救我们脱离非利士人的手，现在他躲避押沙龙逃走了。

以色列人败在大卫的仆人面前；那日阵亡的甚多，共有二万人。因为在那里四面打仗，死于树林的比死于刀剑的更多。

押沙龙献祭的时候，打发人去将大卫的谋士、基罗人亚希多弗从他本城请了来。于是叛逆的势派甚大；因为随从押沙龙的人民，日渐增多。有人报告大卫说：“以色列人的心都归向押沙龙了！”

那时，哈及的儿子亚多尼雅自尊，说：“我必作王”，就为自己预备车辆、马兵，又派五十人在他前头奔走。他父亲素来没有使他忧闷，说：“你是做什么呢？”他甚俊美，生在押沙龙之后。亚多尼雅与洗鲁雅的儿子约押，和祭司亚比亚他商议；二人就顺从他，帮助他。

神喜悦谁，就给谁智慧、知识，和喜乐；惟有罪人，神使他劳苦，叫他将所收聚的、所堆积的归给神所喜悦的人。这也是虚空，也是捕风。

你们如今若按诚实正直待耶路巴力和他的家，就可因亚比米勒得欢乐，他也可因你们得欢乐；不然，愿火从亚比米勒发出，烧灭示剑人和米罗众人，又愿火从示剑人和米罗人中出来，烧灭亚比米勒。”

那同他长大的少年人说：“这民对王说：‘你父亲使我们负重轭，求你使我们轻松些。’王要对他们如此说：‘我的小拇指头比我父亲的腰还粗。我父亲使你们负重轭，我必使你们负更重的轭！我父亲用鞭子责打你们，我要用蝎子鞭责打你们！’”耶罗波安和众百姓遵着罗波安王所说“你们第三日再来见我”的那话，第三日他们果然来了。王用严厉的话回答百姓，不用老年人给他所出的主意，照着少年人所出的主意对民说：“我父亲使你们负重轭，我必使你们负更重的轭！我父亲用鞭子责打你们，我要用蝎子鞭责打你们！”王不肯依从百姓，这事乃出于耶和华，为要应验他藉示罗人亚希雅对尼八的儿子耶罗波安所说的话。以色列众民见王不依从他们，就对王说：“我们与大卫有什么份儿呢？与耶西的儿子并没有关涉。以色列人哪，各回各家去吧！大卫家啊，自己顾自己吧！”于是以色列人都回自己家里去了，

众民跟随他上来，且吹笛，大大欢呼，声音震地。
