There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

At first, all the people served him when he became king. But those who came later weren’t pleased with the way he was ruling. That doesn’t have any meaning either. It’s like chasing the wind.

There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Endless crowds stand around him, but then another generation grows up and rejects him, too. So it is all meaningless— like chasing the wind.

以色列眾支派的人都紛紛議論，說：“王曾經拯救我們脫離仇敵的手，又救了我們脫離非利士人的手，現在他卻躲避押沙龍，離開這地逃走了。

在那裡，以色列人在大衛的臣僕面前被打敗了；那天被殺的人很多，共有二萬人。戰事在那裡蔓延到全地；那一天，樹林所吞滅的比刀劍所吞滅的更多。

押沙龍獻祭的時候，差派人去把大衛的參謀基羅人亞希多弗從他的本城基羅請來。於是叛亂的勢力越來越大，跟隨押沙龍的人民也越來越多。有一個報信的人來見大衛說：“以色列人的心都歸向押沙龍了。”

那時哈及的兒子亞多尼雅妄自尊大，說：“我必作王。”就為自己預備了戰車、騎兵，又有五十人在他前面奔走。他的父親從來沒有責難他說：“你為甚麼這樣作呢？”他的容貌也很英俊，他是在押沙龍之後生的。亞多尼雅與洗魯雅的兒子約押和亞比亞他祭司商議以後，二人都答應支持他。

神把智慧、知識和喜樂賜給他所喜悅的人，卻使罪人作收集和積聚的差事，把所得的歸給神所喜悅的人。這也是虛空，也是捕風。

今日你們若是按著誠實和正直待耶路．巴力和他的家，你們就可以因亞比米勒得喜樂，亞比米勒也可以因你們得喜樂。若不是這樣，願火從亞比米勒出來，吞滅示劍人和伯特米羅人；又願火從示劍人和伯特米羅人出來，吞滅亞比米勒。”

那些與他一同長大的年輕人回答他：“這民對王說：‘你父親加重我們的重擔，現在求你減輕我們的重擔。’你要這樣回答他們：‘我的小指頭比我父親的腰還粗！我父親把一個重擔加在你們身上，我要使你們負更重的重擔；我父親用鞭子責打你們，我要用蠍子鞭責打你們。’”耶羅波安和眾民，照王所說“三天以後再來見我”的那話，第三天來見羅波安。王嚴厲地回答眾人。他拒絕了老年人給他所出的主意，卻照著年輕人給他所出的主意，對他們說：“我父親加重你們所負的重擔，我要使你們負更重的重擔；我父親用鞭子責打你們，我要用蠍子鞭責打你們。”王不肯聽從民眾的請求，因為這個轉變是出於耶和華，為要應驗他藉示羅人亞希雅對尼八的兒子耶羅波安所說的話。以色列眾人見王不肯聽從他們的請求，就回答王說：“我們在大衛裡面有甚麼分呢？我們在耶西的兒子裡面也沒有產業；以色列人哪，回你們自己的家去吧！大衛啊，照顧你自己的家吧！”於是以色列人都回自己的家去了。

眾民都跟隨他上去，吹著笛子，十分歡樂，以致大地也因他們的聲音震裂。
