There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

At first, all the people served him when he became king. But those who came later weren’t pleased with the way he was ruling. That doesn’t have any meaning either. It’s like chasing the wind.

There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Endless crowds stand around him, but then another generation grows up and rejects him, too. So it is all meaningless— like chasing the wind.

以色列众支派的人都纷纷议论，说：“王曾经拯救我们脱离仇敌的手，又救了我们脱离非利士人的手，现在他却躲避押沙龙，离开这地逃走了。

在那里，以色列人在大卫的臣仆面前被打败了；那天被杀的人很多，共有二万人。战事在那里蔓延到全地；那一天，树林所吞灭的比刀剑所吞灭的更多。

押沙龙献祭的时候，差派人去把大卫的参谋基罗人亚希多弗从他的本城基罗请来。于是叛乱的势力越来越大，跟随押沙龙的人民也越来越多。有一个报信的人来见大卫说：“以色列人的心都归向押沙龙了。”

那时哈及的儿子亚多尼雅妄自尊大，说：“我必作王。”就为自己预备了战车、骑兵，又有五十人在他前面奔走。他的父亲从来没有责难他说：“你为什么这样作呢？”他的容貌也很英俊，他是在押沙龙之后生的。亚多尼雅与洗鲁雅的儿子约押和亚比亚他祭司商议以后，二人都答应支持他。

神把智慧、知识和喜乐赐给他所喜悦的人，却使罪人作收集和积聚的差事，把所得的归给神所喜悦的人。这也是虚空，也是捕风。

今日你们若是按着诚实和正直待耶路．巴力和他的家，你们就可以因亚比米勒得喜乐，亚比米勒也可以因你们得喜乐。若不是这样，愿火从亚比米勒出来，吞灭示剑人和伯特米罗人；又愿火从示剑人和伯特米罗人出来，吞灭亚比米勒。”

那些与他一同长大的年轻人回答他：“这民对王说：‘你父亲加重我们的重担，现在求你减轻我们的重担。’你要这样回答他们：‘我的小指头比我父亲的腰还粗！我父亲把一个重担加在你们身上，我要使你们负更重的重担；我父亲用鞭子责打你们，我要用蝎子鞭责打你们。’”耶罗波安和众民，照王所说“三天以后再来见我”的那话，第三天来见罗波安。王严厉地回答众人。他拒绝了老年人给他所出的主意，却照着年轻人给他所出的主意，对他们说：“我父亲加重你们所负的重担，我要使你们负更重的重担；我父亲用鞭子责打你们，我要用蝎子鞭责打你们。”王不肯听从民众的请求，因为这个转变是出于耶和华，为要应验他藉示罗人亚希雅对尼八的儿子耶罗波安所说的话。以色列众人见王不肯听从他们的请求，就回答王说：“我们在大卫里面有什么分呢？我们在耶西的儿子里面也没有产业；以色列人哪，回你们自己的家去吧！大卫啊，照顾你自己的家吧！”于是以色列人都回自己的家去了。

众民都跟随他上去，吹着笛子，十分欢乐，以致大地也因他们的声音震裂。
