因為世人所遭遇的與牲畜所遭遇的，都是一樣：這個怎樣死，那個也怎樣死，兩者的氣息都是一樣，所以人並不勝於牲畜。一切都是虛空。

人所遇者、獸亦遇之、人與獸所遇惟一、此之死猶彼之死、同一氣之呼吸、人無所愈於獸、悉屬虛空、

世人禽獸、同一氣之呼吸、其必死無以異也、則人不遠於禽獸、而萬事悉歸諸虛矣。

人命獸命俱同、原文作人之所遇無異獸之所遇人與獸所遇惟一死亦彼此無異、皆恃呼吸之氣、如此、人無所勝於獸、皆屬於虛、

Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless.

Surely what happens to animals happens to people too. Death waits for people and animals alike. People die, just as animals do. All of them have the same breath. People don’t have any advantage over animals. Nothing has any meaning.

For what happens to the children of man and what happens to the beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity.

For people and animals share the same fate— both breathe and both must die. So people have no real advantage over the animals. How meaningless!

因為智慧人和愚昧人一樣，沒有人永遠記念他們，在未來的日子裡，都會被人遺忘。可歎智慧人跟愚昧人一樣，終必死亡。

你使我的日子窄如手掌，我的一生在你面前如同無有；各人站得最穩的時候，也只不過是一口氣。（細拉）世人來來往往只是幻影，他們忙亂也是虛空；積聚財物，卻不知道誰要來收取。

求你記念我的一生多麼短暫，你創造的世人是多麼虛幻呢！有哪一個人能長活不死，能救自己的性命脫離陰間的權勢呢？（細拉）

人死了，就化為烏有；人一氣絕就不在了。海洋中的水消失，江河枯竭乾涸，人也是這樣一躺下去，就不再起來，直到天都沒有了還不醒過來，也不能從睡眠中被喚醒。

你向牠們掩面，牠們就驚慌；你收回牠們的氣息，牠們就死亡，歸回塵土。

於是我轉念，對日光之下我所勞碌的一切，心感絕望；因為人用智慧、知識和技能所勞碌得來的，卻必須留給未曾勞碌的人為分。這也是虛空，是極大的憾事。人的一切勞碌和操心，就是他在日光之下所勞碌的，對自己有甚麼益處呢？其實終其一生，他的擔子既痛苦又煩惱，在夜間也不能安心。這也是虛空。

我們都是必死的，像水潑在地上不能收回來一樣；但神並不取去人的命，反而設法使逃亡的人不致永遠離開他逃亡。

無理性的人不曉得，愚昧的人不明白這事：惡人雖好像草一樣繁茂，所有作孽的人雖然興旺，他們都要永遠滅亡。

智慧人的眼目明亮，愚昧人卻走在黑暗中。我也知道同一的命運要臨到這兩種人身上。
