Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless.

Surely what happens to animals happens to people too. Death waits for people and animals alike. People die, just as animals do. All of them have the same breath. People don’t have any advantage over animals. Nothing has any meaning.

For what happens to the children of man and what happens to the beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity.

Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled; Thou takest away their breath, they die, And return to their dust.

Therefore I turned about to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labor wherein I had labored under the sun.For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, and with knowledge, and with skilfulness; yet to a man that hath not labored therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.For what hath a man of all his labor, and of the striving of his heart, wherein he laboreth under the sun?For all his days are but sorrows, and his travail is grief; yea, even in the night his heart taketh no rest.
