I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly— my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.

I searched with my heart how to cheer my body with wine— my heart still guiding me with wisdom— and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven during the few days of their life.

Wine produces mockers; alcohol leads to brawls. Those led astray by drink cannot be wise.

So I set out to learn everything from wisdom to madness and folly. But I learned firsthand that pursuing all this is like chasing the wind.

That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty.

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, to guzzle wine. Rulers should not crave alcohol.For if they drink, they may forget the law and not give justice to the oppressed.

Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,

In the few days of our meaningless lives, who knows how our days can best be spent? Our lives are like a shadow. Who can tell what will happen on this earth after we are gone?

So I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God.

We live our lives beneath your wrath, ending our years with a groan.Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away.Who can comprehend the power of your anger? Your wrath is as awesome as the fear you deserve.Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.

Who has anguish? Who has sorrow? Who is always fighting? Who is always complaining? Who has unnecessary bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?It is the one who spends long hours in the taverns, trying out new drinks.Don’t gaze at the wine, seeing how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup, how smoothly it goes down.For in the end it bites like a poisonous snake; it stings like a viper.You will see hallucinations, and you will say crazy things.You will stagger like a sailor tossed at sea, clinging to a swaying mast.And you will say,“ They hit me, but I didn’t feel it. I didn’t even know it when they beat me up. When will I wake up so I can look for another drink?”
