All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest. This too is meaningless.

As long as they live, their work is nothing but pain and sorrow. Even at night their minds can’t rest. That doesn’t have any meaning either.

For all his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity.

“ Man, born of woman, lives but a few days, and they are full of trouble.

It is vain for you to rise early, come home late, and work so hard for your food. Yes, he can provide for those whom he loves even when they sleep.

Then the king departed to his palace. But he spent the night without eating, and no diversions were brought to him. He was unable to sleep.

They strengthened the souls of the disciples and encouraged them to continue in the faith, saying,“ We must enter the kingdom of God through many persecutions.”

Make us happy in proportion to the days you have afflicted us, in proportion to the years we have experienced trouble!

Throughout that night the king was unable to sleep, so he asked for the book containing the historical records to be brought. As the records were being read in the king’s presence,

Yes, we are consumed by your anger; we are terrified by your wrath.You are aware of our sins; you even know about our hidden sins.Yes, throughout all our days we experience your raging fury; the years of our lives pass quickly, like a sigh.The days of our lives add up to seventy years, or eighty, if one is especially strong. But even one’s best years are marred by trouble and oppression. Yes, they pass quickly and we fly away.

In my time of trouble I sought the Lord. I kept my hand raised in prayer throughout the night. I refused to be comforted.I said,“ I will remember God while I groan; I will think about him while my strength leaves me.”( Selah)You held my eyelids open; I was troubled and could not speak.

Jacob said to Pharaoh,“ All the years of my travels are 130. All the years of my life have been few and painful; the years of my travels are not as long as those of my ancestors.”

I am exhausted as I groan; all night long I drench my bed in tears; my tears saturate the cushion beneath me.My eyes grow dim from suffering; they grow weak because of all my enemies.

The sleep of the laborer is pleasant– whether he eats little or much– but the wealth of the rich will not allow him to sleep.

For with great wisdom comes great frustration; whoever increases his knowledge merely increases his heartache.
