All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest. This too is meaningless.

As long as they live, their work is nothing but pain and sorrow. Even at night their minds can’t rest. That doesn’t have any meaning either.

For all his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity.

Their days of labor are filled with pain and grief; even at night their minds cannot rest. It is all meaningless.

由婦所生之人、時日短促、憂苦充盈、

人生遇難、如火星之飛揚、

如曰我牀必慰我、我榻必解我憂、則爾以夢幻驚我、以異象恐我、

爾曹夙興晏寢、勞苦謀食、俱係徒然、上帝所愛者、偃息之時、錫以綏安兮、

爾手朝夕壓我、精液消耗、有如夏日暵其乾兮、○

王乃返宮、終夜禁食、徹樂於其前、亦不成寐、

堅門徒心、勸之恆居於道、言我儕入上帝國必歷多艱、

依爾苦我之日、遘難之年、俾我喜樂兮、

是夕王不得寢、命取歷代史記、乃誦於王前、

我儕因爾怒而消亡、緣爾忿而驚惶兮、我之罪愆、爾陳之於目前、我之隱惡、爾顯之於容光兮、我之時日、度於爾怒、畢我歲月、如歎息之發兮、我之年數、乃為七旬、如其強健、可至八旬、然其所誇、祇為憂苦、其逝迅速、我去如飛兮、

我遭難之日尋求主、夜間舉手不輟、我心不受慰兮、我憶上帝而煩擾、默然思維、神即喪失兮、爾使我目不交睫、煩擾而不能言兮、

對曰、余旅世年百有三十、我之歲月無幾、且歷艱苦、不及吾祖旅世之年、

我身因欷歔而疲乏、每夜涕泣、濕我牀而沾我榻兮、我目因憂愁而衰敗、因諸敵而昏瞶兮、

工人食無多寡、俱得安眠、富者以其豐裕、不得寢睡、○

蓋智慧多、則愁苦亦多、知識增、則憂戚亦增也、
