I said of laughter—“ Madness!”; and of mirth,“ What does it accomplish?”

我指嬉笑说：“这是狂妄。”论喜乐说：“有何功效呢？”

论嬉笑，我说：“这是狂妄。”论享乐，“这有什么用呢？”

论嬉笑，我说：“这是狂妄。”论享乐，“这有什么用呢？”

我说：“欢笑只不过是一阵狂妄，享乐又有什么用！”

对嬉笑，我说：“那是狂妄”；对享乐，我说：“这有什么作用呢？”

论到欢笑，我说：“这是发狂”；论到享乐，我说：“这有什么用呢？”

我言嬉戲惟狂、宴樂無益。

“ Laughter,” I said,“ is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?”

“ Laughter doesn’t make any sense,” I said.“ And what can pleasure do for me?”

I said of laughter,“ It is mad,” and of pleasure,“ What use is it?”

So I said,“ Laughter is silly. What good does it do to seek pleasure?”

I said of laughter,“ It is senseless,” and of pleasure,“ What does this accomplish?”

I said of laughter, It is mad; and of mirth, What doeth it?

Even in laughter the heart may sorrow, And the end of mirth may be grief.

Better to go to the house of mourning Than to go to the house of feasting, For that is the end of all men; And the living will take it to heart.Sorrow is better than laughter, For by a sad countenance the heart is made better.The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, But the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise Than for a man to hear the song of fools.For like the crackling of thorns under a pot, So is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.

that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles— when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you.

Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near;Who lie on beds of ivory, Stretch out on your couches, Eat lambs from the flock And calves from the midst of the stall;Who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments, And invent for yourselves musical instruments like David;Who drink wine from bowls, And anoint yourselves with the best ointments, But are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

And in that day the Lord GOD of hosts Called for weeping and for mourning, For baldness and for girding with sackcloth.But instead, joy and gladness, Slaying oxen and killing sheep, Eating meat and drinking wine:“ Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”
