I said of laughter,[ It is] mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?

我指嬉笑说：“这是狂妄。”论喜乐说：“有何功效呢？”

论嬉笑，我说：“这是狂妄。”论享乐，“这有什么用呢？”

论嬉笑，我说：“这是狂妄。”论享乐，“这有什么用呢？”

我说：“欢笑只不过是一阵狂妄，享乐又有什么用！”

对嬉笑，我说：“那是狂妄”；对享乐，我说：“这有什么作用呢？”

论到欢笑，我说：“这是发狂”；论到享乐，我说：“这有什么用呢？”

我指嬉笑說：「這是狂妄。」論喜樂說：「有何功效呢？」

論嬉笑，我說：「這是狂妄。」論享樂，「這有甚麼用呢？」

論嬉笑，我說：「這是狂妄。」論享樂，「這有甚麼用呢？」

我指着嬉笑說：『這是狂妄』；指着喜樂說：『這有甚麼作用？』

論到歡笑，我說：「這是發狂」；論到享樂，我說：「這有什麼用呢？」

我謂嬉笑為狂、逸樂何益、

我言嬉戲惟狂、宴樂無益。

“ Laughter,” I said,“ is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?”

“ Laughter doesn’t make any sense,” I said.“ And what can pleasure do for me?”

I said of laughter,“ It is mad,” and of pleasure,“ What use is it?”

So I said,“ Laughter is silly. What good does it do to seek pleasure?”

I said about laughter,“ It is madness,” and about pleasure,“ What does this accomplish?”

I said of laughter,“ It is senseless,” and of pleasure,“ What does this accomplish?”

I said of laughter—“ Madness!”; and of mirth,“ What does it accomplish?”

I said of laughter, It is mad; and of mirth, What doeth it?

I said about laughter,“ It is madness,” and about pleasure,“ What does this accomplish?”

I said of partying,“ It is folly,” and of self-indulgent pleasure,“ It accomplishes nothing!”

I said of laughter,“ It is foolishness;” and of mirth,“ What does it accomplish?”

Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth[ is] heaviness.

[ It is] better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that[ is] the end of all men; and the living will lay[ it] to his heart.Sorrow[ is] better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.The heart of the wise[ is] in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools[ is] in the house of mirth.[ It is] better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so[ is] the laughter of the fool: this also[ is] vanity.

That he no longer should live the rest of[ his] time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.For the time past of[ our] life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with[ them] to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of[ you]:

Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;That chant to the sound of the viol,[ and] invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

And in that day did the Lord GOD of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth:And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we shall die.
