故此我恨惡生命，因為在日光之下所發生過的事都使我憂苦；因為都是虛空，都是捕風。

於是我恨惡生命，因為在日光之下所做的事，對我都是悲苦。是的，全是虛空，全是捕風！

我遂惡生、因於日下經營、乃為煩惱、悉屬虛空、莫非捕風、

斯世所為、殷憂慼慼、莫非捕風捉影、故我不樂其生。

我厭惡生命、因我見日下所作之事、皆不善、皆屬於虛、皆如捕風、

So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

So I hated life. That’s because the work done on this earth made me sad. None of it has any meaning. It’s like chasing the wind.

So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless— like chasing the wind.

Therefore, I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me. For everything is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

So I hated life, for the work which had been done under the sun was unhappy to me; because everything is futility and striving after wind.

Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

So I hated life, because the work that is wrought under the sun was grievous unto me; for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

後來，我回顧我手所經營的一切和我勞碌所做的工。看哪，全是虛空，全是捕風；在日光之下毫無益處。

耶和華啊，現在求你取走我的性命吧！因為我死了比活着更好。」

太陽出來的時候，神安排炎熱的東風，太陽曝曬約拿的頭，使他發昏，他就為自己求死，說：「我死了比活着更好！」

甚至我寧可窒息死亡，勝似留我這副骨頭。我厭棄生命，不願永遠活着。你任憑我吧，因我的日子都是虛空。

我見日光之下所發生的一切事，看哪，全是虛空，全是捕風。

惟願你把我藏在陰間，把我隱藏，直到你的憤怒過去；願你為我定下期限，並記得我。

因此，我讚歎那已死的死人，勝過那還活着的活人。

眼睛所看的比心裏妄想的倒好。這也是虛空，也是捕風。

你為何使我看見罪孽？你為何坐視奸惡呢？毀滅和兇暴在我面前，爭執與紛爭不斷發生。

人一切的勞碌操心，就是他在日光之下所勞碌的，又得着了甚麼呢？

我處在兩難之間：我情願離世與基督同在，因為這是好得無比的；然而，我為你們肉身活着更加要緊。既然我這樣深信，就知道仍要留在世間，且與你們眾人一起存留，使你們在所信的道上又長進又喜樂，

如果你這樣待我，倒不如立刻把我殺了吧！我若在你眼前蒙恩，求你不要讓我再受這樣的苦。」

願我出生的那日受詛咒！願我母親生我的那天不蒙福！報信給我父親說「你得了兒子」，使我父親甚歡喜的，願那人受詛咒。願那人像耶和華所傾覆而不憐惜的城鎮；願他早晨聽見哀聲，中午聽見吶喊；因他沒有在我未出胎就把我殺了，以致我母親成為我的墳墓，她卻一直懷着胎。我為何出胎見勞碌愁苦，在羞愧中度盡我的年日呢？

於是靈將我舉起，帶着我走。我就去了，十分苦惱，我的靈火熱；耶和華的手重重地按在我身上。

我又見日光之下，應有公平之處有奸惡，應有公義之處也有奸惡。

求你想念我的生命是何等短暫。你創造世人，要使他們歸於何等的虛空呢？

「遭受患難的人為何有光賜給他呢？心中愁苦的人為何有生命賜給他呢？他們等死，卻不得死；求死，勝於求隱藏的珍寶。他們尋見墳墓，就歡喜快樂，極其高興。

他自己在曠野走了一日的路程，來到一棵羅騰樹下，就坐在那裏求死，說：「耶和華啊，現在夠了！求你取我的性命吧，因為我不比我的祖先好。」
