因此我恨惡生命，因為在日光之下所發生的事，都使我厭煩。一切都是虛空，都是捕風。

我所以恨恶生命；因为在日光之下所行的事我都以为烦恼，都是虚空，都是捕风。

於是我恨惡生命，因為在日光之下所做的事，對我都是悲苦。是的，全是虛空，全是捕風！

我遂惡生、因於日下經營、乃為煩惱、悉屬虛空、莫非捕風、

斯世所為、殷憂慼慼、莫非捕風捉影、故我不樂其生。

我厭惡生命、因我見日下所作之事、皆不善、皆屬於虛、皆如捕風、

So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

So I hated life. That’s because the work done on this earth made me sad. None of it has any meaning. It’s like chasing the wind.

So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless— like chasing the wind.

Therefore, I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me. For everything is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

So I hated life, for the work which had been done under the sun was unhappy to me; because everything is futility and striving after wind.

Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

然後，我省察我手所作的一切，和我勞碌所成就的，想不到一切都是虛空，都是捕風，在日光之下毫無益處。

耶和華啊！現在求你取去我的性命吧，因為我死了比活著還好。”

日出的時候，神又安排炎熱的東風。烈日曬在約拿的頭上，以致發昏，他就為自己求死，說：“我死了比活著還好。”

以致我寧可窒息而死，也不肯保留我這一身的骨頭。我厭惡自己，不願永遠活下去。任憑我吧，因為我的日子都是空虛的。

我看過日光之下所發生的一切事，不料，一切都是虛空，都是捕風。

但願你把我藏在陰間，把我隱藏，直到你的怒氣過去；願你為我定一個期限，好記念我。

我讚歎那已死的人，勝過那還活著的人。

眼睛看見的，勝過心中想望的。這也是虛空，也是捕風。

你為甚麼使我看見惡行？有奸惡的事，你為甚麼見而不理？毀滅和強暴在我面前，紛爭和相鬥常常發生。

人的一切勞碌和操心，就是他在日光之下所勞碌的，對自己有甚麼益處呢？

我處於兩難之間，情願離世與基督同在，因為那是好得無比的。可是為了你們，我更需要活在世上。我既然這樣深信，就知道還要活下去，並且要繼續和你們大家在一起，使你們在信心上有長進，有喜樂，

你既然這樣待我，如果我在你面前蒙恩，求你把我殺了，免得我看見自己的苦楚。”

願我生的那一天受咒詛！願我母親生我的那一天不蒙祝福！那向我父親報喜信：“你得了一個男孩”，叫我父親十分高興的，願那人受咒詛！願那人像耶和華所傾覆而不顧惜的城市，願他早晨聽見哀號，午間聽見戰爭的吶喊。因為他沒有使我死於母腹，好使我的母親成了我的墳墓，我永遠留在母腹中。我為甚麼要出母胎，經歷勞苦和憂傷，並且我的年日都消逝在羞辱之中呢？

靈使我升起，把我提去。那時我心靈忿激、愁苦。耶和華的手強而有力臨到我身上。

我在日光之下又看見：審判的地方有奸惡，維護公義的地方也有奸惡。

求你記念我的一生多麼短暫，你創造的世人是多麼虛幻呢！

為甚麼有光明賜給勞碌的人，有生命賜給苦命的人呢？他們想死卻死不了，找死勝於找寶藏；他們找到墳墓就高興，非常歡喜快樂。

他自己卻在曠野走了一天的路，來到一棵羅騰樹下，就坐在那裡求死，說：“耶和華啊，現在已經夠了，求你取我的性命吧，因為我並不比我的列祖好。”
