所以，我憎惡生命，因為在日光之下所做的一切都令我愁煩。唉！這一切都是虛空，都是捕風。

我所以恨恶生命；因为在日光之下所行的事我都以为烦恼，都是虚空，都是捕风。

于是我恨恶生命，因为在日光之下所发生的事我都以为烦恼，全是虚空，全是捕风。

于是我恨恶生命，因为在日光之下所做的事，对我都是悲苦。是的，全是虚空，全是捕风！

故此我恨惡生命，因為在日光之下所發生過的事都使我憂苦；因為都是虛空，都是捕風。

於是我恨惡生命，因為在日光之下所做的事，對我都是悲苦。是的，全是虛空，全是捕風！

我遂惡生、因於日下經營、乃為煩惱、悉屬虛空、莫非捕風、

斯世所為、殷憂慼慼、莫非捕風捉影、故我不樂其生。

我厭惡生命、因我見日下所作之事、皆不善、皆屬於虛、皆如捕風、

So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

So I hated life. That’s because the work done on this earth made me sad. None of it has any meaning. It’s like chasing the wind.

So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless— like chasing the wind.

Therefore, I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me. For everything is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

So I hated life, for the work which had been done under the sun was unhappy to me; because everything is futility and striving after wind.

Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

然而，當我回顧雙手辛勤經營的一切成就時，唉，卻發現都是虛空，都是捕風；日光之下的一切都毫無益處。

耶和華啊，求你收回我的性命吧，我死了比活著還好！」

太陽出來的時候，上帝颳起燥熱的東風，烈日把約拿曬得發昏，他就再次求死說：「我死了比活著還好！」

以致我寧願窒息而死，也不願這樣活著。我厭惡生命，不想永活。不要管我，因為我的日子都是虛空。

我觀察一切日光之下所做的事，看啊，都是虛空，好像捕風。

但願你把我藏在陰間，把我藏起來直到你息怒，定下眷顧我的日期。

我為那已死的人慶幸，因為他們比活著的人幸福。

滿足於眼前所有的，勝過心中貪想的。這也是虛空，如同捕風。

你為何讓我目睹罪惡？你為何容忍邪惡？我眼前盡是毀滅和暴力，到處是紛爭和衝突。

世人在日光之下勞心勞力，究竟得到什麼呢？

我處在兩難之間。我情願離開世界，與基督在一起，那實在是再好不過了。可是為了你們，我應該活在世上。我既然對此深信不疑，就知道自己仍要活下去，繼續跟你們在一起，好使你們在信仰上又長進又充滿喜樂。

你既然這樣對待我，求你施恩殺了我吧，別讓我受苦了！」

願我出生的那天受咒詛！願我母親生我的那天不蒙祝福！願那告訴我父親喜得貴子、使他歡喜的人受咒詛！願那人像被耶和華無情毀滅的城！願他早晨聽見哀鳴，中午聽見戰爭的呐喊，因為他沒有把我殺死在母腹中，沒有使母腹成為我的墳墓，讓我永遠留在裡面。為什麼我要從母胎出來，經歷患難和痛苦，在羞辱中度過一生呢？

靈把我舉起帶走了。我心裡苦悶，充滿憤怒，耶和華大能的手在我身上。

我又看到日光之下，即使在公道和正義之地也有邪惡。

願你顧念我的生命何其短暫！你創造的世人何其虛幻！

「為何賜光給受苦的人，賜生命給心靈痛苦的人？他們等候死亡卻等不到，他們求死勝於求寶藏。他們歸入墳墓時非常快樂，欣喜若狂。

自己在曠野走了一天的路程，來到一棵羅騰樹下，坐下來禱告求死，說：「耶和華啊，我受夠了，求你取走我的性命吧，我不比我的祖先強。」
