Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth before you grow old and say,“ Life is not pleasant anymore.”

And it is good for people to submit at an early age to the yoke of his discipline:

When people live to be very old, let them rejoice in every day of life. But let them also remember there will be many dark days. Everything still to come is meaningless.

Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.

Then Jesus called for the children and said to the disciples,“ Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children.

O God, you have taught me from my earliest childhood, and I constantly tell others about the wonderful things you do.Now that I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God. Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me.

Come, my children, and listen to me, and I will teach you to fear the Lord.

So refuse to worry, and keep your body healthy. But remember that youth, with a whole life before you, is meaningless.

You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.

“ I love all who love me. Those who search will surely find me.

Yet you brought me safely from my mother’s womb and led me to trust you at my mother’s breast.I was thrust into your arms at my birth. You have been my God from the moment I was born.

So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes. And the Lord said,“ This is the one; anoint him.”So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.

But the Lord said to Samuel,“ Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away.

I am eighty years old today, and I can no longer enjoy anything. Food and wine are no longer tasty, and I cannot hear the singers as they sing. I would only be a burden to my lord the king.

The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master.

As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him, and everything Samuel said proved to be reliable.And all Israel, from Dan in the north to Beersheba in the south, knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the Lord.The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh and gave messages to Samuel there at the Tabernacle.

But Joseph refused.“ Look,” he told her,“ my master trusts me with everything in his entire household.No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.”

Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew taller and grew in favor with the Lord and with the people.

But Samuel, though he was only a boy, served the Lord. He wore a linen garment like that of a priest.

The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The Lord was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.

There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God’s favor was on him.Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover festival.When Jesus was twelve years old, they attended the festival as usual.After the celebration was over, they started home to Nazareth, but Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents didn’t miss him at first,because they assumed he was among the other travelers. But when he didn’t show up that evening, they started looking for him among their relatives and friends.When they couldn’t find him, they went back to Jerusalem to search for him there.Three days later they finally discovered him in the Temple, sitting among the religious teachers, listening to them and asking questions.All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.His parents didn’t know what to think.“ Son,” his mother said to him,“ why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been frantic, searching for you everywhere.”“ But why did you need to search?” he asked.“ Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?”But they didn’t understand what he meant.Then he returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. And his mother stored all these things in her heart.Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.

Now I am giving him to the Lord, and he will belong to the Lord his whole life.” And they worshiped the Lord there.

He did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight and followed the example of his ancestor David. He did not turn away from doing what was right.During the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, Josiah began to seek the God of his ancestor David. Then in the twelfth year he began to purify Judah and Jerusalem, destroying all the pagan shrines, the Asherah poles, and the carved idols and cast images.

God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and wisdom. And God gave Daniel the special ability to interpret the meanings of visions and dreams.

A lot of good they are to me— those worn out wretches!

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God!The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!” Saul finally consented.“ All right, go ahead,” he said.“ And may the Lord be with you!”

All Israel will mourn for him and bury him. He is the only member of your family who will have a proper burial, for this child is the only good thing that the Lord, the God of Israel, sees in the entire family of Jeroboam.

But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.Now God had given the chief of staff both respect and affection for Daniel.

Solomon replied,“ You showed great and faithful love to your servant my father, David, because he was honest and true and faithful to you. And you have continued to show this great and faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne.“ Now, O Lord my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around.And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted!Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?”The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom.So God replied,“ Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies—I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have!

for he will be great in the eyes of the Lord. He must never touch wine or other alcoholic drinks. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even before his birth.

Lord, we show our trust in you by obeying your laws; our heart’s desire is to glorify your name.

But as soon as I leave you, the Spirit of the Lord will carry you away to who knows where. When Ahab comes and cannot find you, he will kill me. Yet I have been a true servant of the Lord all my life.

Worshiping foreign gods has sapped their strength, but they don’t even know it. Their hair is gray, but they don’t realize they’re old and weak.
