There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

He is thrust from light into darkness, and driven out of the world.

Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him.

As he came from his mother’s womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand.This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind?

In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that man may not find out anything that will be after him.

But a man dies and is laid low; man breathes his last, and where is he?

and who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity.

because sometimes a person who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.What has a man from all the toil and striving of heart with which he toils beneath the sun?For all his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity.

one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks,“ For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy business.

The more words, the more vanity, and what is the advantage to man?

I said in my heart,“ Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity.I said of laughter,“ It is mad,” and of pleasure,“ What use is it?”I searched with my heart how to cheer my body with wine— my heart still guiding me with wisdom— and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven during the few days of their life.I made great works. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself.I made myself gardens and parks, and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees.I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees.I bought male and female slaves, and had slaves who were born in my house. I had also great possessions of herds and flocks, more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem.I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I got singers, both men and women, and many concubines, the delight of the sons of man.So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me.And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil.Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.

Give glory to the Lord your God before he brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the twilight mountains, and while you look for light he turns it into gloom and makes it deep darkness.

He wanders abroad for bread, saying,‘ Where is it?’ He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand;

So Jesus said to them,“ The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness! Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains a great and powerful people; their like has never been before, nor will be again after them through the years of all generations.

I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live;also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil— this is God’s gift to man.

They said to you,“ In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.”

So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

Then I said in my heart,“ What happens to the fool will happen to me also. Why then have I been so very wise?” And I said in my heart that this also is vanity.

Even though he should live a thousand years twice over, yet enjoy no good— do not all go to the one place?

And I commend joy, for man has nothing better under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.
