At the beginning their words are folly; at the end they are wicked madness—

At first what they say is foolish. In the end their words are very evil.

“ Who is this fellow David?” Nabal sneered to the young men.“ Who does this son of Jesse think he is? There are lots of servants these days who run away from their masters.Should I take my bread and my water and my meat that I’ve slaughtered for my shearers and give it to a band of outlaws who come from who knows where?”

Then Herod called for a private meeting with the wise men, and he learned from them the time when the star first appeared.Then he told them,“ Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!”

But all the men of Israel complained to the king,“ The men of Judah stole the king and didn’t give us the honor of helping take you, your household, and all your men across the Jordan.”The men of Judah replied,“ The king is one of our own kinsmen. Why should this make you angry? We haven’t eaten any of the king’s food or received any special favors!”“ But there are ten tribes in Israel,” the others replied.“ So we have ten times as much right to the king as you do. What right do you have to treat us with such contempt? Weren’t we the first to speak of bringing him back to be our king again?” The argument continued back and forth, and the men of Judah spoke even more harshly than the men of Israel.There happened to be a troublemaker there named Sheba son of Bicri, a man from the tribe of Benjamin. Sheba blew a ram’s horn and began to chant:“ Down with the dynasty of David! We have no interest in the son of Jesse. Come on, you men of Israel, back to your homes!”

At this, the enemies of Jesus were wild with rage and began to discuss what to do with him.

“ Listen here, you men of Benjamin!” Saul shouted to his officers when he heard the news.“ Has that son of Jesse promised every one of you fields and vineyards? Has he promised to make you all generals and captains in his army?Is that why you have conspired against me? For not one of you told me when my own son made a solemn pact with the son of Jesse. You’re not even sorry for me. Think of it! My own son— encouraging him to kill me, as he is trying to do this very day!”

“ We gave you strict orders never again to teach in this man’s name!” he said.“ Instead, you have filled all Jerusalem with your teaching about him, and you want to make us responsible for his death!”But Peter and the apostles replied,“ We must obey God rather than any human authority.The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead after you killed him by hanging him on a cross.Then God put him in the place of honor at his right hand as Prince and Savior. He did this so the people of Israel would repent of their sins and be forgiven.We are witnesses of these things and so is the Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those who obey him.”When they heard this, the high council was furious and decided to kill them.

He answered,“ If the Lord doesn’t help you, what can I do? I have neither food from the threshing floor nor wine from the press to give you.”

“ You will surely die, Ahimelech, along with your entire family!” the king shouted.And he ordered his bodyguards,“ Kill these priests of the Lord, for they are allies and conspirators with David! They knew he was running away from me, but they didn’t tell me!” But Saul’s men refused to kill the Lord’s priests.Then the king said to Doeg,“ You do it.” So Doeg the Edomite turned on them and killed them that day, eighty five priests in all, still wearing their priestly garments.

But one day some men from the Synagogue of Freed Slaves, as it was called, started to debate with him. They were Jews from Cyrene, Alexandria, Cilicia, and the province of Asia.None of them could stand against the wisdom and the Spirit with which Stephen spoke.So they persuaded some men to lie about Stephen, saying,“ We heard him blaspheme Moses, and even God.”

But some Pharisees said,“ Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”

His host was amazed to see that he sat down to eat without first performing the hand washing ceremony required by Jewish custom.

Saul didn’t say anything about it that day, for he said to himself,“ Something must have made David ceremonially unclean.”But when David’s place was empty again the next day, Saul asked Jonathan,“ Why hasn’t the son of Jesse been here for the meal either yesterday or today?”Jonathan replied,“ David earnestly asked me if he could go to Bethlehem.He said,‘ Please let me go, for we are having a family sacrifice. My brother demanded that I be there. So please let me get away to see my brothers.’ That’s why he isn’t here at the king’s table.”Saul boiled with rage at Jonathan.“ You stupid son of a whore!” he swore at him.“ Do you think I don’t know that you want him to be king in your place, shaming yourself and your mother?As long as that son of Jesse is alive, you’ll never be king. Now go and get him so I can kill him!”“ But why should he be put to death?” Jonathan asked his father.“ What has he done?”Then Saul hurled his spear at Jonathan, intending to kill him. So at last Jonathan realized that his father was really determined to kill David.

Then the leading priests decided to kill Lazarus, too,

Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men’s report of the star’s first appearance.

If a wise person takes a fool to court, there will be ranting and ridicule but no satisfaction.

As Jesus was leaving, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees became hostile and tried to provoke him with many questions.They wanted to trap him into saying something they could use against him.

On the fourth day they said to Samson’s wife,“ Entice your husband to explain the riddle for us, or we will burn down your father’s house with you in it. Did you invite us to this party just to make us poor?”

“ May God strike me and even kill me if I don’t separate Elisha’s head from his shoulders this very day,” the king vowed.

It began with Demetrius, a silversmith who had a large business manufacturing silver shrines of the Greek goddess Artemis. He kept many craftsmen busy.He called them together, along with others employed in similar trades, and addressed them as follows:“ Gentlemen, you know that our wealth comes from this business.But as you have seen and heard, this man Paul has persuaded many people that handmade gods aren’t really gods at all. And he’s done this not only here in Ephesus but throughout the entire province!Of course, I’m not just talking about the loss of public respect for our business. I’m also concerned that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will lose its influence and that Artemis— this magnificent goddess worshiped throughout the province of Asia and all around the world— will be robbed of her great prestige!”At this their anger boiled, and they began shouting,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

The Jewish leaders were infuriated by Stephen’s accusation, and they shook their fists at him in rage.But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand.And he told them,“ Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand!”Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting. They rushed at himand dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.As they stoned him, Stephen prayed,“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
