But Nabal responded to David’s servants,“ Who is David, and who is this son of Jesse? This is a time when many servants are breaking away from their masters!Should I take my bread and my water and my meat that I have slaughtered for my shearers and give them to these men? Then Herod privately summoned the wise men and determined from them when the star had appeared.He sent them to Bethlehem and said,“ Go and look carefully for the child. When you find him, inform me so that I can go and worship him as well.”

Then all the men of Israel began coming to the king. They asked the king,“ Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, sneak the king away and help the king and his household cross the Jordan– and not only him but all of David’s men as well?”All the men of Judah replied to the men of Israel,“ Because the king is our close relative! Why are you so upset about this? Have we eaten at the king’s expense? Or have we misappropriated anything for our own use?”The men of Israel replied to the men of Judah,“ We have ten shares in the king, and we have a greater claim on David than you do! Why do you want to curse us? Weren’t we the first to suggest bringing back our king?” But the comments of the men of Judah were more severe than those of the men of Israel.Now a wicked man named Sheba son of Bicri, a Benjaminite, happened to be there. He blew the trumpet and said,“ We have no share in David; we have no inheritance in this son of Jesse! Every man go home, O Israel!”

But they were filled with mindless rage and began debating with one another what they would do to Jesus.

Saul said to his servants who were stationed around him,“ Listen up, you Benjaminites! Is Jesse’s son giving fields and vineyards to all of you? Or is he making all of you commanders and officers?For all of you have conspired against me! No one informs me when my own son makes an agreement with this son of Jesse! Not one of you feels sorry for me or informs me that my own son has commissioned my own servant to hide in ambush against me, as is the case today!”

saying,“ We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name. Look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood on us!”But Peter and the apostles replied,“ We must obey God rather than people.The God of our forefathers raised up Jesus, whom you seized and killed by hanging him on a tree.God exalted him to his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.And we are witnesses of these events, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.”Now when they heard this, they became furious and wanted to execute them.

He replied,“ No, let the LORD help you. How can I help you? The threshing floor and winepress are empty.”

But the king said,“ You will surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s house!Then the king said to the messengers who were stationed beside him,“ Turn and kill the priests of the LORD, for they too have sided with David! They knew he was fleeing, but they did not inform me.” But the king’s servants refused to harm the priests of the LORD.Then the king said to Doeg,“ You turn and strike down the priests!” So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests. He killed on that day eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.

But some men from the Synagogue of the Freedmen( as it was called), both Cyrenians and Alexandrians, as well as some from Cilicia and the province of Asia, stood up and argued with Stephen.Yet they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke.Then they secretly instigated some men to say,“ We have heard this man speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.”

But some of the Pharisees said,“ Why are you doing what is against the law on the Sabbath?”

The Pharisee was astonished when he saw that Jesus did not first wash his hands before the meal.

However, Saul said nothing about it that day, for he thought,“ Something has happened to make him ceremonially unclean. Yes, he must be unclean.”But the next morning, the second day of the new moon, David’s place was still vacant. So Saul said to his son Jonathan,“ Why has Jesse’s son not come to the meal yesterday or today?”Jonathan replied to Saul,“ David urgently requested that he be allowed to go to Bethlehem.He said,‘ Permit me to go, for we are having a family sacrifice in the city, and my brother urged me to be there. So now, if I have found favor with you, let me go to see my brothers.’ For that reason he has not come to the king’s table.”Saul became angry with Jonathan and said to him,“ You stupid traitor! Don’t I realize that to your own disgrace and to the disgrace of your mother’s nakedness you have chosen this son of Jesse?For as long as this son of Jesse is alive on the earth, you and your kingdom will not be established. Now, send some men and bring him to me. For he is as good as dead!”Jonathan responded to his father Saul,“ Why should he be put to death? What has he done?”Then Saul threw his spear at Jonathan in order to strike him down. So Jonathan was convinced that his father had decided to kill David.

So the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too,

When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he became enraged. He sent men to kill all the children in Bethlehem and throughout the surrounding region from the age of two and under, according to the time he had learned from the wise men.

If a wise person goes to court with a foolish person, there is no peace whether he is angry or laughs.

When he went out from there, the experts in the law and the Pharisees began to oppose him bitterly, and to ask him hostile questions about many things,plotting against him, to catch him in something he might say.

On the fourth day they said to Samson’s bride,“ Trick your husband into giving the solution to the riddle. If you refuse, we will burn up you and your father’s family. Did you invite us here to make us poor?”

Then he said,“ May God judge me severely if Elisha son of Shaphat still has his head by the end of the day!”

For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought a great deal of business to the craftsmen.He gathered these together, along with the workmen in similar trades, and said,“ Men, you know that our prosperity comes from this business.And you see and hear that this Paul has persuaded and turned away a large crowd, not only in Ephesus but in practically all of the province of Asia, by saying that gods made by hands are not gods at all.There is danger not only that this business of ours will come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be regarded as nothing, and she whom all the province of Asia and the world worship will suffer the loss of her greatness.”When they heard this they became enraged and began to shout,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

When they heard these things, they became furious and ground their teeth at him.But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently toward heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.“ Look!” he said.“ I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”But they covered their ears, shouting out with a loud voice, and rushed at him with one intent.When they had driven him out of the city, they began to stone him, and the witnesses laid their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul.They continued to stone Stephen while he prayed,“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”
