傳道者曰、虛空之虛空、虛空之虛空、萬事虛空、

吾觀萬事、空之又空、虛之又虛、

柯希列曰、凡事虛中之虛、虛中之虛、皆屬於虛、

“ Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher.“ Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”

“ Meaningless! Everything is meaningless!” says the Teacher.“ Everything is completely meaningless! Nothing has any meaning.”

Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.

“ Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher,“ completely meaningless!”

“ Absolute futility,” says the Teacher.“ Absolute futility. Everything is futile.”

“ Futility of futilities,” says the Preacher,“ Futility of futilities! All is futility.”

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher; vanity of vanities, all is vanity.

“ Absolute futility,” says the Teacher.“ Absolute futility. Everything is futile.”

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all[ is] vanity.

“ Futile! Futile!” laments the Teacher,“ Absolutely futile! Everything is futile!”

“ Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher;“ Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

Man is like a breath; His days are like a passing shadow.

For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope;

“ Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher,“ All is vanity.”

Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my age is as nothing before You; Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. SelahSurely every man walks about like a shadow; Surely they busy themselves in vain; He heaps up riches, And does not know who will gather them.

He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; Nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity.

Surely men of low degree are a vapor, Men of high degree are a lie; If they are weighed on the scales, They are altogether lighter than vapor.Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them.

Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule over all my labor in which I toiled and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done And on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun.

For God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that he may give to him who is good before God. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

For all his days are sorrowful, and his work burdensome; even in the night his heart takes no rest. This also is vanity.

There is one alone, without companion: He has neither son nor brother. Yet there is no end to all his labors, Nor is his eye satisfied with riches. But he never asks,“ For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good?” This also is vanity and a grave misfortune.

So I said in my heart,“ As it happens to the fool, It also happens to me, And why was I then more wise?” Then I said in my heart,“ This also is vanity.”

Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, And put away evil from your flesh, For childhood and youth are vanity.

Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals; one thing befalls them: as one dies, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over animals, for all is vanity.

For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; yet he must leave his heritage to a man who has not labored for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.

But if a man lives many years And rejoices in them all, Yet let him remember the days of darkness, For they will be many. All that is coming is vanity.

There was no end of all the people over whom he was made king; Yet those who come afterward will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Since there are many things that increase vanity, How is man the better?
