For I was terrified at the LORD’s intense anger that threatened to destroy you. But he listened to me this time as well.

I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the Lord listened to me.

I was afraid of the Lord’ s great anger. He was so angry with you he wanted to destroy you. But the Lord listened to me again.

Moses and Aaron were among his priests; Samuel was one of those who prayed to him. They prayed to the LORD and he answered them.

Hanani, who was one of my relatives, along with some of the men from Judah, came to me, and I asked them about the Jews who had escaped and had survived the exile, and about Jerusalem.They said to me,“ The remnant that remains from the exile there in the province are experiencing considerable adversity and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem lies breached, and its gates have been burned down!”When I heard these things I sat down abruptly, crying and mourning for several days. I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.Then I said,“ Please, O LORD God of heaven, great and awesome God, who keeps his loving covenant with those who love him and obey his commandments,may your ear be attentive and your eyes be open to hear the prayer of your servant that I am praying to you today throughout both day and night on behalf of your servants the Israelites. I am confessing the sins of the Israelites that we have committed against you– both I myself and my family have sinned.We have behaved corruptly against you, not obeying the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments that you commanded your servant Moses.

I said,“ Sovereign LORD, stop! How can Jacob survive? He is too weak!”The LORD decided not to do this. The sovereign LORD said,“ This will not happen either.”

“ I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more they can do.But I will warn you whom you should fear: Fear the one who, after the killing, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!

He threatened to destroy them, but Moses, his chosen one, interceded with him and turned back his destructive anger.

At Horeb you provoked him and he was angry enough with you to destroy you.
